Last week proved to be a big week for the Huntington Beach High
boys’ basketball team.
The Oilers used James Bailey’s big, three-point basket in the
waning moments of last weekend’s Sunset League basketball showdown
with Los Alamitos to post a 45-44 victory over the visiting Griffins.
That win, coupled with a 40-37 road triumph over Fountain Valley,
gave Huntington Beach a share of the league lead with Marina.
A year ago, the Oilers won two Sunset contests in 10 games and
finished in sixth place.
Bailey finished the game with 10 points.
The Oilers were led by Brandon McLaughlin’s 12 points, and Bret
Van Voorhis finished with 11.
In a 40-37 win over Fountain Valley, Van Voorhis netted 11 points
and McLaughlin dropped in 10.
Marina earned a share of the Sunset lead with victories over
Fountain Valley and Esperanza.
In beating host Fountain Valley, 54-40, Matt Brennan scored 17
points, and James Lambert contributed 14 more to lead the Vikings.
In rolling past Esperanza, 71-59, Lambert led the way with 18
points to lead four Vikings to score in double figures.
Matt McNease finished with 16 points, Brennan had 13, and Stephen
Becker scored 12.
Edison lost a share of the league lead when it was defeated by
Esperanza, 45-42. Hosts the Aztecs outscored the Chargers, 11-5, in
the final quarter to rally for the victory.
Dave Huff scored 14 points, and Billy Braun had 13 for the
Chargers. Leading scorer Tommy Grady was held to six points.
Ocean View defeated Costa Mesa for the second time this season,
winning, 73-42, on its home court.
Matt Sargeant hit half of Ocean View’s eight, three-point shots
and led all scorers with 24 points. Casey Ortiz hit a pair of
three-pointers and scored 10 points overall.
The Seahawks went on to notch victory No. 20 of the season -- and
improve to 8-0 in league play, in the process -- in a 65-50 road win
at Orange.
Ortiz topped all Ocean View scorers with 20 points, Sargeant had
18, and Bear Wurts finished with 11.
In girls’ basketball, Edison avenged an earlier loss to Esperanza
in Sunset League play and assumed sole possession of first place
after a 46-32 home court victory.
Sophomore Rebecca Kepilino came up big again for the Chargers, her
21 points and 10 rebounds leading the way.
While Edison was taking care of the Aztecs, the Chargers were
receiving help from Huntington Beach, which dropped Los Alamitos from
a share of the league lead, 48-44.
A balanced Oilers’ attack saw Mo Finn score 13 points and Katia
Hadj-Hamou scored 10 points.
Marina came up with a big league win as the host Vikings romped
past Fountain Valley, 59-36.
Marina limited the Barons to just two second-quarter points and
just 11 overall in the first half.
Mimi Kaneko led the Vikings with 14 points, and Sarah McLeod
scored 12.
Ocean View won for the third time in Golden West League play,
beating host Costa Mesa, 45-37.
Erica Williams’ game-high 28 points keyed the victory.
In boys’ soccer, goals by J. T. Searles and Shane Parker lifted
host Marina past Esperanza, 2-1.
The Vikings also shut down Fountain Valley, 4-0.
Huntington Beach was edged in overtime by Fountain Valley, 1-0.
In girls’ soccer, Edison and Esperanza battled to a scoreless tie.
Christina Fernandez had seven saves in goal for the Chargers.
Marina dropped a 4-0 decision to Fountain Valley, and Huntington
Beach was on the short end of a 1-0 score to Los Alamitos.
In girls’ water polo, Marina rolled past Edison, 7-2. Edison fell
to Canyon, 15-9, and Huntington Beach was downed by Villa Park, 13-5.
