CdM turns it on in the third quarter, 52-36

Corona del Mar High’s girls basketball team turned it on in the

second half and grabbed a 52-36 Pacific Coast League decision at

Tesoro Tuesday.

Tesoro, 1-20 overall and winless in league, enoyed a 22-18

halftime lead, but Corona del Mar Coach James Barkalow apparently got

his message across at halftime.

“I was a little upset,” said the first-year CdM coach. “We beat

them in the first round something like 65-36 and here we were down at

the half.”

Corona del Mar responded with a 23-9 run in the third quarter,

keyed by a defensive effort which tied Tesoro in knots.

Kelliann Klein led CdM with 18 points and Madison Otterbein

chipped in with 11 points as CdM improved to 10-11, 5-2.

Tars impress, 39-23

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors improved to 13-12, 3-5 in the Sea

View League with a solid effort against visiting Irvine, posting a

16-point margin of victory behind the play of Jillianne Whitfield,

Athena Vasquz, Vanessa Miller, Tiffany Linsday and Lindsey Woller.

Whitfield had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals, four-year

starter Vasquez had six points, five assists and five rebounds, and

Woller had eight points and eight boads. Also, Miller scored seven

points and Linsday contributed five points. Irvine fell to 0-8 in the

Pacific Coast League.

Sage Hill just misses

Sage Hill School dropped a 44-40 Academy League decision to

league-leader St. Margaret’s as the visitors got hot from the outside

in the third quarter to drop Sage Hill to 11-5, 3-4 in league.

The loss spoiled some lofty statistics racked up by Sage Hill.

Haywood Wright had 19 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks. Katie

Puishys had eight points and eight rebounds, and Debbie Yoder-Lee had

seven steals. St. Margaret’s improves to 14-3, 7-0.

In boys basketball Tuesday:

Lightning falls, 61-60

* BOYS BASKETBALL -- The run continues for the St. Margaret’s

Tartans, although Sage Hill School’s boys basketball team made the

visitors Iearn their 21st victory in as many games Tuesday at Newport

Coast.

The Tartans got by the Lightning, 61-60, in Academy League play

despite a 34-point effort from Michael Fitzhugh.

Sage Hill had the ball with six seconds left but the shot didn’t

fall.

The Tartans (7-0 in league) had four players score in double

figures, compared to Fitzhugh and Kevin Joyce (11 points) for the

Lightning (8-13, 3-4 in league).

Sage Hill only had 14 rebounds (five offensive and nine defensive)

with Fitzhugh and Joyce each grabbing four. Joyce tallied six

assists.
