Mixed feelings on the way residents view the old Port Theater
- Share via
I believe that the Port Theater deserves landmark status. It is a
wonderful building. It needs to be preserved.
DEMETRIO KERRISON
Newport Coast
It definitely should be established as a landmark status. I think
it would be a crime to eliminate it.
JOAN NEPILLE
Newport Beach
I think it should be a landmark theater, considering that in the
Corona del Mar area there is hardly anything of culture there anyway.
So if some independent theater could run, I think that would be
good for the community and good for Newport Beach
KEVIN WILKES
Costa Mesa
I do not think that it warrants landmark status.
I have been a 35-year resident, I have been to the Port Theater
and to me it has absolutely no historical value. I mean it is not
like the Huntington Museum or something.
I would venture to say 80% of the people in Newport have never
walked into the Port Theater. It doesn’t have any architectural value
at all, it is an eyesore, I believe, and I believe it should be torn
down. And I don’t think the taxpayers’ money should go into reviving
it because I don’t see any value in it.
LINDA THOMPSON
Newport Beach
I have lived in Corona del Mar 30 years. I was there at the
opening of the Port Theater. I saw many movies there, I saw “Gone
with the Wind” there.
I think it is a very nice little theater. I think they ought to
restore it and have old movies. Some of the older people would enjoy
that and they could even walk or come at daytime or at night.
A lot of the young people miss out on some of those wonderful old
movies.

Port Theater is a cool thing, keep it.
RUSSELL JENKINS
Corona del Mar
I would say yes it does; it has been there for a very long time.
Another theater in that location would be wonderful to refurbish it,
even for a smaller audience would be a plus and I would be unhappy to
see it go to another use.
JUDY COOPER
Corona del Mar
Please keep the Port and Balboa theaters. We can do something with
them, we must preserve some of the beauty of Old Newport. I always
was going to the Port when it was open, so let’s hope we keep it.
GLORIA RUZICKA
Newport Beach
I am in favor of keeping the landmark status.
BETTY BLOOD
Corona del Mar
I believe that the theater deserves landmark status. It is an
artistic, quaint theater. I have always loved that theater, it has
got history to it.
And I think that Councilman Dick Nichols is insensitive and
totally out of line and out of character and not in -- I think his
comments are ridiculous, let me just put it that way. Absolutely
ridiculous and he should just move if he doesn’t like it.
JENNIFER IRANI
Newport Beach
I do believe it should come down; it is very much of an eyesore.
