CdM, Tesoro tie, 0-0

Playing on a small and hard field, the Corona del Mar High girls

soccer team and host Tesoro dueled to a scoreless tie Tuesday in

Pacific Coast League play in Las Flores.

The Sea Kings (9-3-2, 6-0-1 in league) dominated the first half

despite the field neutralizing their attack, said CdM Coach Bryan

Middleton.

“The field was as hard as a rock, kind of like Astroturf, so we

couldn’t spread the ball around like we normally do,” Middleton said.

CdM outshot the Titans (13-5-2, 4-2-1 in league) by six in the

first half and had a penalty shot that missed in the 72nd minute.

Paige Janes and Kinzie Kramer anchored the defense and Sea Kings’

goalkeeper Tanisha Senaratne had five saves.

* Newport 1, Irvine 1

Newport Harbor High’s girls finished 1-1 with visiting Irvine in

Sea View League play to become 5-9-6, 3-3-2 in league.

Nichelle McRorier scored Harbor’s only goal with 7:45 spent off a

cross from Barbara Julian.

Irvine tied it at the 38:23 mark on an outside shot.

Kara DeMille (three saves) and Lilja Addeman (two saves) shared

goalkeeping duties for the Sailors, who appear to need two victories

in their last two league games to clinch a CIF Playoffs berth.

In boys action Tuesday:

* Orange 4, Costa Mesa 0: Players on Orange High’s soccer team

exploited gaps in host Costa Mesa’s defense and shut out the Mustangs

in Golden West League action at Costa Mesa.

Orange’s Juan Miranda scored the first Panther goal in the 15th

minute and it stayed 1-0 until the second half. Eddie Navarro scored

two goals to lead the Panthers (8-2-1 in league).

Mesa is now 18-1, 0-8-1 in league.

Mesa managed a penalty kick in the first half, but couldn’t

convert. Day said plays like that have typified the season.

John Ruiz had six saves in goal for the Mustangs while Benjamin

Elias and Willmer Hernandez each continued to impress Day with

aggressive defense.

Mesa hosts cross-town rival Estancia at 3 p.m. Thursday.

* Santa Ana 2, Estancia 1: Estancia saw its record fall to

6-10-1, 3-7-1 in the Golden West League as Santa Ana improved to

12-6-4, 7-1-2.

Luis Mendoza got the Eagles’ only goal in the 70th minute to cut

the deficit in half.

* St. Margaret’s 4, Sage Hill 1: St. Margaret’s improved to 7-0-0

in the Academy League with the victory at Sage Hill.

Freshman forward Zack Milder broke up the shutout bid with a goal

four minutes into the second half off an assist from Caesar Arriaga

to cut the deficit to 2-1.

On a breakaway, Milder struck to the lower right-hand corner of

the goal.

Goalkeeper Ethan Tanney had 19 saves for Sage Hill, which fell to

6-4-4, 2-2-3 in league.
