Police arrest man after stabbing
Police arrested a 28-year-old Costa Mesa man early Saturday
morning on suspicion of attempted murder after he reportedly stabbed
another man during an argument outside Alejandro’s Mexican
Restaurant, officials said.
Mario Remijio reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim
once on the upper body after “words were exchanged” outside the
restaurant at the corner of 19th Street and Placentia Avenue at about
1:45 a.m., Costa Mesa Police Detective Sgt. Jack Archer said.
Remijio fled the scene, but officers caught up with him and
arrested him in an alley off 19th Street, Archer said.
He said the victim is in stable condition at Western Medical
Center in Santa Ana and is “recovering from his injuries.”
Investigation of Hard Rock fight continues
Newport Beach investigators continue to look into a “fun dance
event” that ended with a fight in the parking lot Saturday night at
the Hard Rock Cafe in Fashion Island, officials said.
When the incident ended, police arrested 21-year-old Muzaffar Zain
of Irvine on suspicion of attacking a 23-year-old UC Irvine student
with a hockey stick, Newport Beach Police Lt. John Klein said. The
victim was hospitalized.
Between 500 and 600 people were at the Hard Rock Cafe, which had
been rented out to a UCI group. About 300 people were reportedly
still in line waiting to get in when the fight broke out.
Klein said that the fight erupted between two groups of people in
the parking lot. Police also said on Sunday that shots may have been
fired during the melee and that shell casings were found at the
scene.
Detectives are still investigating whether shots were fired, Klein
said, but no one on scene suffered gunshot wounds.
Zain was arrested on suspicion of causing battery with great
bodily injury, Klein said.
