Newport surfers win big
Alex Knost, Nick Johnson and Andrew Doheny were the biggest
winners Sunday, the second of two days of the fourth annual Newport
Harbor High Surf Classic.
The event, contested in surf ranging from 2-4 feet Sunday at 54th
Street, included 138 club surfing entrants, competing in seven
divisions.
Knost, a Newport Harbor senior, won the open longboard division
and was second in the high school division (grades 9-12).
Johnson, who attends Monte Vista High, won the high school
division and was also fourth in the men’s open division.
Doheny, 9, won the elementary school division (kindergarten
through fifth grades), then finished fourth in the high school
division, which included competitors twice his age. Doheny posted the
highest first-round score in the high school division Saturday.
Other winners included: Geoff Moysa, a local Newport Beach
professional who claimed the men’s open division; Newport Harbor
sophomore Erika Hosseini (women’s division); Steve Farmer (middle
school division, grades 6-8); and Newport Harbor alumnus Josh Kast
(open bodyboard division).
Other second-place finishers included Mickey Klein (men’s open),
Amy Lowry (women’s open), Andy Gold (open bodyboard), Steve Farwell
(open longboard), Brian Doheny (middle school) and Jared Cassidy
(elementary).
Third-place finishers included Joe Alani (men’s open), Robin
Senour (women’s), Daniel Mathews (open bodyboard), Justin Hugan
(longboard), Will Anderson (high school), Christian Morabito (middle
school) and Jesse Steelman (elementary).
