The store l.a. Eyeworks is known for its cutting-edge styles and

uncommon frame names such as Perk, Flame, Grill and Licks.

Celebrities are fans: Elton John, Mick Jagger, Carly Simon and Robin

Williams are often seen wearing l.a. Eyeworks.

Since 1979, l.a. Eyeworks owners and designers Barbara McReynolds

and Gai Gherardi have been more interested in being artistic than

selling products. Collections are never driven by a marketing sense.

Some are inspired by the designers’ travels. Ornate ironwork designs

were from Spain, and a layered lacquer with carvings design came from

the Orient. More than 100 styles are in the l.a. Eyeworks collection,

and a few other designers are carried, including Oliver Peoples,

Romeo Gigli and Paul Smith. Frames start at $160. Interesting gift

items are carried for an optical store. There are graphite

sculptures, herbs for eyes, watches and a fun flip-clock with
