The Harbor Mesa Lions aren’t sleeping this week

It’s a busy time of the year for members of the Harbor Mesa Lions
Club. First, their meeting on Monday will feature students from
Newport Harbor High School who will compete in the annual Student
Speakers Contest, sponsored by Lion’s International. The topic for
speeches this year is, “Terrorism and World Security.” Winning
speakers from the club level will go on to compete in the Regional
and District competition, ending at the Multiple District contest
with winnings totaling up to $18,000.
They will also welcome a new member, Lisa McIntosh, who is
sponsored by Barbara Hayward. Harbor Mesa member Joan Parks will
officiate at the installation. The dinner meeting will start at 6:30
p.m. Monday at the Costa Mesa Country Club.
Then on Saturday, the Harbor Mesa Lions will hold a garage sale at
the home of member Ann McIlroy, 204 Loyola Road in Costa Mesa,
starting at 7 a.m. Proceeds from the garage sale will be given to
local charitable organizations.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SPIRIT RUN:
More than 400 volunteers are needed to staff Orange County’s
Largest 5K/10K Road and Walk Race on Sunday, March 9.
“We are aggressively seeking volunteers to fill the 400 positions
needed to help us put on the Spirit Run 2003,” said Jim and Nadine
Turner, volunteer chairs for the run.
In its 20th year, the Spirit Run is the largest road race and
walking event in Orange County, having grown into a great 10K and 5K
run/walk, Kids one-mile, half- and quarter-mile races and kids
exposition. The Spirit Run consistently attracts more than 7,000
participants, including 2,000 younger than 12. The proceeds directly
benefit the educational programs at five local elementary schools:
Andersen, Eastbluff, Harbor View, Lincoln and Newport Coast.
In the past 20 years, the Spirit Run has developed into a major
source of funds for educational programs at these five schools. Net
proceeds from Spirit Run 2002 exceeded $125,000.
Interested volunteers can contact Jim or Nadine Turner at (949)
640-5350 or nadineturner3@
cox.net if they would like to help.
NEWPORT RIBS FOR FISH:
The Newport Rib Co. and FISH Harbor Area Inc. are holding a
fund-raising day on Feb. 19 at the restaurant. Mention FISH when you
order, and 20% of the proceeds for dine-in or takeout meals will be
donated to FISH to assist low-income families in Orange County. The
Newport Rib Co. is at 2196 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa. Takeout hours
that day are from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. You can dine in from 4 p.m.
to 9:30 p.m.
Founded in 1968 by local Shirley Watts, FISH is celebrating its
35th year of community service. Its mission is preventing hunger and
homelessness in the community. Each year, FISH assists more than
1,200 families in Orange County. These families account for more than
6,400 people, more than half of them children. FISH supplements the
work of its small staff with the support of more than 550 volunteers
and stretches its cash by using donated food and supplies.
Invite your spouse, family and neighbors to go FISH-ing with you
at Newport Rib Co. It’s good food and a good cause.
