A Classic blowout
It’s billed as the Coast-Cerritos New Year’s Classic, but the only
item which appeared to be in the “Classic” category was a classic
blowout as Orange Coast College’s women’s basketball team destroyed
visiting Rio Hondo Saturday night, 81-23.
Reserves led the way in scoring as Liz Mendoza and Amy Shaw came
off the bench to score 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Lauren Murray was the only starter in double figures with 10
points.
Starters Nancy Hatsushi and Lindsey Galasso had nine and eight
points, respectively.
The Pirates had just six personal fouls, and Rio Hondo but eight.
Coast won the turnovers category by a 39-16 margin and hit 32 of
56 attempts from the field (57%).
It was 48-10 at halftime as the Pirates improved to 13-3. Rio
Hondo fell to 3-11.
In college men’s action:
Cal Poly Pomona was an 86-61 winner over visiting Vanguard
University Saturday night in a nonconference game.
Josh Pierson had 15 points to pace Vanguard, which fell to 4-6.
In college women’s action:
Vanguard University dropped a 58-49 decision to Cumberland College
in the first of two Golden State Athletic Conference Challenge games
at The Master’s College in Santa Clarita.
