Newport Harbor wins in double overtime to claim consolation
title
Newport Harbor High’s Sailors captured the consolation
championship fo the Granite City Classic in St. Cloud, Minn.
Saturday, taking Apollo High of St. Cloud into double overtime before
winning, 60-56.
Nedim Pajevic, who had 17 points and 20 rebounds, paved the way
despite playing most of the second half and both of the four-minute
overtimes with four fouls hanging over his head.
Chase Cameron had 10 points, and all of them came in the two
overtime sessions. Brett Lowenthal had 12 points.
Apollo, with two starters headed for St. John’s, fell to 9-2. One
of them, 6-foot-9 DeShaun Williams, led all scorers with 29 points.
The Sailors improved to 8-4.
Corona del Mar tramples La Quinta, 63-36
BOYS: Senior Pancho Seaborn scored 21 points, including four
three-pointers, to lead the Corona del Mar High boys basketball team
to a 63-36 consolation semifinal victory over La Quinta in the
Estancia Coast Classic Saturday.
The Sea Kings (5-8) fell behind, 10-4, in the first quarter but
came back and built a 28-19 halftime lead. CdM senior Brett Matsen
nailed two three-pointers in the Sea Kings’ pivotal second quarter.
Matsen finished with 10 points, while Kevin Mancillas added eight.
The Sea Kings will face Hoover in the consolation championship
Monday at 4:50 p.m. at Estancia High.
Costa Mesa drops 57-50 decision to San Pasqual
BOYS: Costa Mesa High’s boys basketball team fell behind by a 22-7
count after one quarter and could not fully recover, despite a
sterling 28-17 fourth-quarter run in a 57-50 loss to San Pasqual at
the Orange Holiday Classic.
Danny Krikorian led Costa Mesa with 15 points, and Curtis Milward
chipped in with 11 points.
The Mustangs, 4-8, return to the tournament’s final day on Monday
at 9 a.m. in a 15th-place game.
Newport Harbor falls, 54-45, in Las Vegas
GIRLS: Newport Harbor High Coach Jen Thompson said her team
improved because of facing pressure defense as the Sailors wrapped up
action in the Centennial Tournament in Las Vegas with a 54-45 loss to
Douglas Saturday.
Newport junior Jillianne Whitfield scored a game-high 17 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds, while senior Lindsey Woller added 11 points
and five rebounds
Thompson also added the Sailors (9-6) will be prepared when Sea
View League play begins Jan. 9 against Foothill at Newport Harbor.
Venice drops Estancia, 54-36, at Canyon tourney
GIRLS: Estancia High’s girls lost a 54-36 verdict to Venice
Saturday at the Canyon Tournament, sending the Mustangs to the
seventh-place game against Rosemead Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Eagles, 5-7, were paced by Tisha Gray (15 points). Also in
double figures was Nancy Castro with 10 points.
The Eagles had two starters foul out and were without the services
of standout Trisha Wase, who was absent because of prior commitments.
Costa Mesa overwhelms Tesoro, 59-23
GIRLS: Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team earned a shot at
the consolation championship on Monday against Tustin at 3 p.m.
following its 59-23 victory over Tesoro in the consolation semifinals
of the Costa Mesa Tournament Saturday.
The Mustangs were led by Rhondi Naff, who had 23 points.
It was 31-10 at halftime as Costa Mesa improved to 7-5.
