Laguna Senior traveling team places second

The Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach had its Senior League

boys’ traveling team capture second place at last weekend’s Orange

County Tournament.

The countywide single-elimination event took place at the Boys and

Girls Club of Huntington Beach.

Laguna defeated Fullerton and Buena Park to reach the championship

game, where the team lost to Santa Ana.

Representing Laguna Beach on the Senior League traveling team were

team MVP E.J. Gomez, Lance Usserey, Alex and Eric Vasquez, Marcus

Hairston, Ryan Bradley, Sean Cooper and Jeff Chan.

In Laguna Beach Boys and Girls Club Senior Division play:

Heat 29, Suns 26

Andrew Brown and Pierre Masson combined for 28 rebounds to lead

the Heat.

Jazz 34, Sonics 20

Brothers Eric and Alex Vasquez combined for 16 points to lead the

Jazz.

Spurs 33, Magic 18

The Spurs’ Kyle Jenkins earned player of the game honors.

Senior Division standings: 1T. Jazz (2-0), Spurs (2-0); 3T. Heat

(1-1), Suns (1-1); 5T. Magic (0-2), Sonics (0-2).

In Junior Division play:

Celtics 23, Spurs 22

The play of Raphael Vickers carried the Celtics to the overtime

victory.

Bulls 26, Pacers 17

Troy Donenfeld scored 18 points for the Bulls and earned player of

the game honors.

Jazz 22, Lakers 19

The Jazz overcame a slow start to down the Lakers.

Heat 28, Sonics 13

The Heat’s offense was in high gear, and the defense shut down the

Sonics.

Suns 29, Magic 26

Alec Loechner turned in a strong second-quarter performance to

lead the Suns.

Lakers 26, Rockets 9

The Lakers’ Zack Evehart scored 10 points to go along with three

rebounds and two assists. He was named player of the game.

Hornets 19, Bulls 17

Jack Clark hit a last-second shot to lift the Hornets to victory.

Celtics 24, Magic 22

Raphael Vickers hit a game-winning shot as time expired.

Spurs 29, Pacers 28

The Spurs’ Alec Jaffe won player of the game honors, with 10

points and six rebounds.

The Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach has 200 youngsters

competing in the 2002-2003 basketball season. Eight teams of players

in grades 1 and 2 make up the Instructional League; 12 teams of

players in grades 3 through 5 play at the Junior Division level; and

six teams comprised of players in grades 6 through 8 make up the

Senior Division.
