Police introduce bike safety program
Costa Mesa Police Department’s Traffic Bureau will hold a bicycle
safety program for 2003. The goal of the program is to reduce traffic
injuries by educating the public about bicycle safety. The program, a
collaboration with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, will
target elementary school students.
Officers aim to educate students about local laws, safety
practices and inspecting bicycle equipment. Selected students will
receive helmets. Awards will also be given to schools that comply
with safety practices. The program is being funded by the California
Office of Traffic Safety through the Business Transportation and
Housing Agency.
Extra DUI patrolling set
The Newport Beach Police Department, in collaboration with the
Orange County DUI Task Force, will host a “DUI Saturation Patrol” on
Saturday when several teams will patrol for drivers under the
influence of alcohol or drugs.
The program is funded by a grant from the state Office of Traffic
Safety. Unlike DUI checkpoints that are designed to educate drivers,
the function of the task force is to find and arrest drivers impaired
by alcohol.
