QuickSilver rolls to boys under-14 title

With minutes left to play, Costa Mesa QuickSilver’s Osbaldo Soto
scored on a 25-yard direct kick into the upper net to secure a 4-3
Area Q championship victory over Tustin in Boys under-14 AYSO Region
120 soccer action.
The win caps a 15-1-2 season for Mesa, including a 5-0 run in the
Area Q Tournament of Champions.
Costa Mesa had nine different players score a total of 12
tournament goals.
In the championship game Tustin led, 1-0, but Mario Alvarado
scored off a corner kick by Soto to even it.
QuickSilver’s Rodrigo Botazzi took a pass from Alvarado and pushed
it past a charging Tustin goalkeeper to go up, 2-1.
Mesa upped the action with a 25-yard shot by Luu Nguyen to give
QuickSilver a 3-1 lead at halftime before Tustin tied the game, 3-3
in the second half.
QuickSilver battled Tustin to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation
in the semifinals before going to a shootout.
Mesa’s Benny Edles, Michael Mejia and Soto scored in the shootout
to secure a 4-1 win. QuickSilver goalkeeper Jorge Oporto stopped
three of the first four Tustin penalty kicks in the shootout.
Soto and Ly Nguyen each scored in Game 2 to lead QuickSilver past
Newport Beach, 2-0.
In Game 3, QuickSilver dug itself a hole against North Irvine,
giving up two goals in the first three minutes of the game.
But Mejia and Botazzi evened the score by halftime with Soto and
Zack Fisk each adding scores in the second half to secure a 4-2
victory.
Mesa outscored South Irvine, 2-1, in the first tournament game on
scores by Edles in the first half, and a shot from Chris Fuentes with
two minutes remaining.
Throughout the season and the tournament, QuickSilver’s offense
was supported by Bradley Reitler.
The defense was led by Raymond Villalba, Rick Olguin and sweeper
Daniel Ordaz.
Mark Seckel, Fuentes and Oporto shared time in goal.
The tournament featured 14 teams that finished either first or
second in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach, Corona del Mar, Tustin, North
and South Irvine and Yorba Linda.
