ARTESIA -- Estancia High’s girls basketball team got it going in
the second quarter and used a 15-6 spurt to key a 50-46 victory over
Inglewood in the first round of the Artesia Tournament Monday
evening.
Trisha Wase scored 14 points and Xochitl Byfield netted 13 points
as the Eagles improved to 5-1 and grabbed a berth in the second round
Wednesday at Millikan High in Long Beach, starting at 5:25 p.m.
“We were a little inconsistent,” said Estancia Coach Tami Rappa.
“We had a little time out and a little conversation.”
As a result the Eagles applied full-court pressure and a trap and
Estancia went from a 13-12 deficit entering the quarter to a 27-19
lead as the quarter ended, giving the Eagles the momentum they needed
to hold off Morningside.
Tisha Gray had nine points and 10 rebounds, and Byfield and Wase
had nine and six boards, respectively.
