Led by tournament-Most Valuable Player Haywood Wright and
all-tournament selection Carrie Clark, the Sage Hill High girls
basketball team won the Fairmont Small Schools Classic Saturday.
The Lightning remained undefeated (6-0), downing Holy Martyrs,
42-39, on 15 points each from Wright and Clark.
Wright also led Sage Hill in the rebounding department (12) and
Katie Puishys had 10 boards.
No team ever led by more than 10, said Sage Hill Coach Shanna
Renkin, who praised her team’s character.
“(Sage Hill) worked to press and zone on defense and offense,”
Renkin said. “They put all their heart into it and that’s all I can
ask. It was a battle all the way.”
Debbie Yoder-Lee, who scored nine points for the Lightning, made a
steal and followed with a layup to give Sage Hill a lead, which
pleased Renkin.
Holy Martyrs was more muscular than the Lightning, but Sage Hill
persevered, Renkin added.
The Lightning hosts Connelly at home Tuesday in a nonleague
matchup.
