Newport Harbor High’s club surfing team, unbeaten in 10 league
dual meets, dropped a 77-70 nonleague surfing meet to Edison at 9th
Street in very cold , 4- 6-foot surf Thursday morning.
It was the first of five nonleague meets leading to the State Meet
in March.
Newport won two of the four short board heats led by heat winners
Geoff Rill and Will Anderson. Second in heats were Matt Doheny and
Tommy Holbrook.
David Neira, Alex Knost and Joey Head were fourth in heats, and
fifth-place efforts were turned in by Nathan Stoneman, Morgan Hill
and Erica Hosseini. Brian Pearson was sixth in one heat.
Long boarder Alex Knost took first place while freshman Brett
Catron was third and freshman Jared Mell was sixth.
Justin Kast, Dan Kretschmar and Mike Beck were third, fourth and
sixth in body boards.
The girl’s division was won by sophomore Erica Hosseini while
Robin Senour and Amy Lowry went 3-4.
The next nonleague meet for Newport is against Marina Dec. 19 in
Huntington Beach.
