Nothing but net

The Newport-Mesa Boys seventh-grade All-Net basketball team opened

up its season in a big way, with a 55-28 victory against South Coast

at Capistrano Valley High Sunday in Mission Viejo.

Jamie McGee led the team with 15 points and Robbie Boyer added 10

points and three steals. Joe Eberhard and P.J. Simpson each

contributed seven points and three assists and Ali Meshkin chipped in

four points and six rebounds.

Kyle Caldwell, John Swift, Will Kelly, Jonathan Howse and R.J.

D’Cruz played solidly.

In Girls National Junior Basketball action:

* Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketball kicked off last weekend

with girls third and fourth-grade action getting underway.

The Newport Golden Hawks beat the Newport Hoop Wizards, 23-16.

Ellie Nadal led the Hawks with 10 points and Kathryn Connor

contributed six.

The Hoop Wizards were led by Laura Martinez’ 12 points.

In the second game, the Newport Wizards defeated the Newport

Lakers, 26-18. Brooke Lux with 12 points and Saylor Schroff’s seven

points led the Wizards while Kelsey Carrido’s 11 points paced the

Lakers.

Irvine’s Trojans defeated the Newport Sparks, 36-19. Newport was

led by Duran Sharp’s six points and Alex Aiello (five points).

Lindsey Peterson led Irvine with 12 points.

* The Costa Mesa Wizards Boys Club 4 Basketball team came from

behind in the final minutes to win their opener.

Taylor Wildman and Wyeth Rietveld led a second-half charge.

Rietveld led the Wizards with 10 points while Wildman added nine

points, two assists and four steals.

Andrew Duhoux, Spencer Rautus and Cameron Knight played solid

defense throughout, including two blocked shots and three-last minute

stops to seal the victory.

Cassidy Gatewood and Tyler Franzen Domenic Re was the Wizards’

floor leader at the point guard.
