Neno Boonyaplanun from University High and Chris Whalen of Saint
Francis in Mountain View have signed national letters of intent with
the UC Irvine men’s golf program, Anteater Coach Paul Smolinski said.
Boonyaplanun was the Pacific Coast League champion last year and
also captured the title of the Los Angeles Junior Championship with a
5-under 211 for three rounds at Griffith Park Golf Course. Past
champions of that tournament include Al Geiberger, John Cook, Bob May
and Tiger Woods.
“I am very excited that Neno chose to play his collegiate golf at
UC Irvine,” Smolinski said. “He has a tremendous amount of tournament
experience and success at all levels of junior competition. He will
be an asset to our program.”
Whalen finished eighth in the California State Junior Amateur
Championship at Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno this past August. He
was the medalist at three tournaments in the 2001-02 season.
