HOOPS: Orange Coast College’s women’s basketball team was a 78-61
winner over Allan Hancock of Santa Maria Wednesday in the first round
of the Cuesta Tournament, setting up a semifinal match against
Bakersfield College at 6 p.m.
Nancy Hatsushi ran off three straight threes in the early going to
set the pace and the Pirates (6-3) were in control.
Alisa Carrillo had a season-high 18 points and Hatsushi (13), Liz
Mendoza (12, and nine rebounds) and Lauren Murray 10) chipped in with
double-figure scoring.

HOOPS: Costa Mesa High’s girls basketball team fell to 1-2 after
absorbing a 59-49 loss to Lakewood at the Bellflower Tournament
Wednesday as Lakewood used a 24-4 edge in the third quarter to negate
a 31-24 halftime deficit.
Rhondi Naff had 18 points and Susy Trujillo scored 11 points for
the Mustangs.

Mesa girls roll, 3-0
SOCCER: Costa Mesa High stayed undefeated (2-0) with a 3-0 victory
over University Thursday in girls soccer play at Costa Mesa.
Jenny Sparks scored two goals and Stacy Krikorian netted one ball
for the Mustangs.
Sage Hill wins
WATER POLO: The Sage Hill High girls water polo team improved to
1-1 with a 7-3 nonleague win over visiting Pacifica Thursday at
Corona del Mar High. The Lightning, which lost its season opener to
Rancho Alamitos Monday, did not allow more than one goal in any
quarter.
The Sage Hill junior varsity defeated Pacifica, 9-5.

Eagles fall, 1-0
SOCCER: The Estancia High girls soccer team lost, 1-0, to visiting Katella after what could be described as a confusing call by
officials that led to the game’s lone goal Wednesday.
Estancia Coach Nadine Rajabi said a referee blew a whistle with
about four minutes left, for an offside call on Katella, but the
Knights kept playing and scored a goal, while the Eagles (0-1-1)
stopped because of the whistle. The head referee ruled the shot a
goal.
Estancia goalie Paula Arona recorded eight saves.
Sailors lose, 2-0
SOCCER: Newport Harbor High’s girls soccer team dropped a 2-0 pool
play decision to Capistrano Valley in pool play in the Mater Dei
Tournament at Centennial Park.
Kara DeMille had four first-half saves, and Lilja Addeman had one
save in the second half.
The Sailors, 0-2, duel Esperanza today at 2:45 p.m.
