Costa Mesa High football coach Dave Perkins will add boys athletic
director to his duties at the school, it was announced Tuesday.
Perkins, who just completed his second season by leading the
Mustangs to only the second outright league championship in the
program’s 43 varsity seasons, replaces Kirk Bauermeister, who
resigned in September to become an assistant principal at the school.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity to be a bigger part of
the athletic program,” said Perkins, who was the athletic director at
Imperial High for two years (1978-80).
“I know I have some big shoes to fill, because Kirk did a good job
of putting things in place. Hopefully, I can continue what he has
done as A.D. and add to it.”
Perkins said his first task will be to look at the existing
facilities and determine where improvements are needed most.
“I know people in the community, so I think I can enlist some help
as we try to upgrade and make Costa Mesa the best it can be,” Perkins
said.
Perkins, who was an assistant varsity baseball coach last spring,
said he will likely give up that role.
He said, however, his responsibilities as athletic director will
not affect his role as the football coach.
Perkins also said football will not gain any extra attention or
resources at the expense of other sports.
“Being a small school, sharing athletes is very important at Costa
Mesa,” Perkins said. “I need to make sure all the programs are
strong.”
Perkins said he will work with Pat Leahy, the school’s girls
athletic director.
