Newport downs San Juan
The Newport Strikers’ defense shut out San Juan in AYSO Region 97
Girls under-13 APP Plus soccer play.
Andrea Aqueveque scored the lone goal on a pass from Cassidy
Gayner.
Midfielders Alice Cope, Monique Gallardo, Kristina Heimstaedt,
Claire Josephson and Lyndsi Lewan pushed the ball toward the
forwards.
Strong defense was provided by Sarah Cope, Kelly De Young, Lily
Dierkes, Stephanie Nealey, Tia Shefflette and keeper Maddy McMains.
Brittany Sowers played at third striker.
In Girls under-14 play:
* Goldfishies 3, Blue Crush 1
The Goldfishies downed the Blue Crush in a playoff game with goals
from Teyana Moyer, Nikki Liddicote and Melissa Mead.
Steady defense was provided by Katie Drake, Shaina Griffing, Jenny
Erpenbeck and Brisa Garnier.
In Girls under-12 play:
* Patriots 3, Bruisers 0
Two goals from Kailey Grant sparked the Patriots in their shut out
win.
Page Purmort added the final goal and solid defensive efforts were
given by Katherine Sanders, Kate Klippert and Amber Millan.
* Red Crush 2, Patriots 1
Mia Buttera scored the lone Patriot goal in a tight contest.
Grant, Jordan May, Avery Amies and Purmort played steady in a
losing effort.
In Girls under-11 APP Plus play: * Newport 4, South Irvine 1
Elizabeth Eddy knocked in two goals and Paige More and Claire
Ramser each tallied one goal apiece for Newport in the win.
Eddy scored her goals on assists from McKenna Cottam and Caroline
Hardenbergh.
Strong midfield play by Kasey DeYoung, Kelly Heenan, Kristie
Jacobs and Natalie Argueta kept pressure on Irvine. Defense was
provided by Kim Ramser, Veronica McLean, Marianne Jones, Terra
Friedman and keeper Courtney Francis.
* Newport 4, Laguna Niguel 1
Heenan and Eddy both scored two goals each to lead Newport to a
three-goal victory.
Solid defense was provided by Claire and Kim Ramser, McLean,
Jacobs, Jones and Francis in goal.
Cottam, Argueta, DeYoung, Hardenbergh and More controlled the
midfield.
In Girls under-10 action:
* Quicksilver 4, Teenie Wahinis 1
Quicksilver went through the season undefeated, beating the Teenie
Wahinis, 4-1 Saturday, to win the AYSO Region 97 Girls-under 10
championship.
Alex Whiting, Rachel Wilbur, Ruby Robles and Cheyenne Liddicote
helped Lauren Grupe score two goals for the 14-0 Quicksilver. Chelsie
Delameter and Claire Silva both tallied one goal each.
Strong defense was provided by Gwen Gaylord and Lexi McCardle
along with Leah Harper and Jessica Hensley.
Goalkeeper Devon Brannick made several saves.
* Blue Angels 3, Teal Tigers 2 (overtime)
Beth Barnard scored her second goal of the game in overtime to
lift the Blue Angels to the win and third place.
Barnard booted the ball from 25 yards out over all the defenders
for the game-winner and buried a shot into the net to give the Blue
Angels a 2-0 lead.
Madison Wooters scored the Angels’ first goal. She had two goals
in the regular season.
The Angels’ Blakeley Ficenec launched an arching shot late in the
fourth quarter that Tiger goalie Kendra Mann made a save on to send
the game into overtime.
Josie Jogwe played hard for four quarters as the Blue Angels kept
the pressure on.
Kathryn Zimmerman, Allison Schelin, Biz Buckingham, Alex Murphy,
Jordan Pickard, Amanda Rogers, Sadie Evans and Sarah Tegel also
contributed to the Angels’ success this season.
* Blue Angels 6, Teal Tigers 0
Barnard scored three goals to lead the Angels to a shutout in a
must-win game Saturday.
Josie Jogwe got the scoring started with the first of her two
goals followed by a Wooters’ goal.
Brittney Stair and Yeager played steady for the Tigers and solid
midfield play by Ficenec turned back many Tiger attacks.
* Blue Crush 1, Parrotheads
Sarah Vetrovec scored for the Blue Crush and strong performances
were turned in by Kiley Johnson, Mary Ahearn, Lauren D’Ippolito and
Madison Grant.
In Girls under-7 play:
* Green Cheetahs vs. Blue Dolphins
McKenna Johnson scored two goals with offensive help from Emily
Nall while Molly Manser, Alice Miller and Sydney Kohlenberger
provided the defense.
* Firecrackers vs .Blue Dolphins
The Firecrackers played tough in their final game of the season.
Analysa Vivanco scored some skillful goals for the Firecrackers
with defensive support from Rosalie Deliz, Katie Donald, Andie
Strode, Cortlynn Clement, Hailey Oberst, Alana Courier, Emily Conant,
Savannah Gardner and Diana Fujii.
In Girls under-6 action:
* The Silver Dolphins got goals from two new goal scorers in
their final game.
Rowan Frederiksen and Alyssa Quintero both scored their first
goals of the season and Carlee Kapana and Mackenzie Gaddis played
strong throughout the game as well.
Gabby Mangano, Rachel Whittelegge and Amanda Sheppard made key
assists and Kate Pipkin had several key saves, kicking the ball over
the defenders’ heads at one point.
Kelly McFetters showed hustle running down several breakaway
attempts.
Abbey Picket was out ill.
