Saints alive and well

It took three overtime periods and a portion of a sudden-death

quarter to determine the Boys under-14 championship in AYSO Region 57

soccer action.

Brian Licorish scored the winning goal for the Saints as they beat

the Hot Lava, 3-2 Sunday.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. Phillip Bannan

and Alex Neff scored for the Saints and Spencer Price and Jeffrey

Grant tallied goals for the Red Lava.

The Strikers defeated the Saints, 3-0 Nov. 16.

Licorish scored two goals and Bannan tallied one goal for the

Strikers.

Charlie Long made a save on a penalty shot.

In other playoff action:

* Green Team 0, Red Team 0

* Green Team 5, Red Team 2

Licorish scored three goals in the fourth quarter and Shian Jalalz

added two goals.

In the Boys under-12 championship game:

* Blue Hydras 1, Silver Bullets 0

The Blue Hydras got their ninth and most important shutout to beat

the Silver Bullets for the title.

Wes Baker scored on a penalty kick late in the fourth quarter to

give the Hydras the championship.

Eric Hansen, Yousseff Farfan, Aaron Varasteh and Andrew Iverson

provided the offensive charge with solid defense by Hunter Adler,

Spencer Morris, Jack Murphy, Scott Hansen, Stephen Sheldon, Patrick

Vorwerck, Lane Wilhelm and goalkeeper Brad Jones.

The Silver Bullets finished the regular season ranked No. 1 and

were led offensively by Camden Nicholson, Ori Tabak, Tommy Bangert,

Koomi Chehabi, Kevin Corrigan and Jonathan Jaffee.

The defense was led by Scott Berkhausen, Anthony Francisco, Jamie

Heinecke, Jarrett Logan, Alex Mainthow and goalkeeper Connor

Benvenuti.

In the Boys under-10 championship: * Team USA 3, Gunners 0

Jack Gorab scored two goals and Mason Case added another goal for

Team USA in the shutout win. Team USA finishes the season undefeated.

Gorab scored one of his goals on a penalty kick and Case got an

assist from Nicholas Molinaro.

Team USA played stifling defense led by Blake Allen, Michael Dahl,

Louis Sheldon and the goalie trio of Michael Ayzin, Ryan Gooding and

Clark Cashion.

Gooding and Evan Ehrenberg mounted several second-half attacks

that led to Gorab’s two goals.

In Division 5:

The Blue Crush finish the season undefeated with two wins and two

ties in the playoffs and eight wins and one tie in the regular

season.

* Gunners 2, Rams 1

The Gunners will represent Corona del Mar in future AYSO Boys

under-10 regional play after their 2-1 victory over the Rams

Saturday.

The Gunners (11-1-2) won the American League championship. Nick

Gooding scored the first goal after stealing the ball deep in Rams

territory and Brandon Rus added the second goal after taking a pass

from Jack Nowak.

Emery Molnar, Spencer Christoff and Nowak controlled the midfield

and Baron Brown and Nathan Chisholm created several scoring

opportunities.

Cameron Orr anchored the Gunners’ defense and was assisted by Ryan

Durazo and Colin Beaver.

Tanner Grandstaff and Molnar made saves to preserve the win for

Coach Andrew Nowak.

The Gunners advanced to the championship game after beating the

Strikers, 2-0 Nov. 20.

Gooding scored twice for the Gunners. The game marked the ninth

time in 14 games the Gunners held their opponents scoreless.

In the Girls under-10 title game:

* Mighty Storm 3, Lemon Crush 1

The Mighty Storm clinched the championship with a two-goal win,

led in scoring by Kaylee O’Connor (two goals) and Kaela Schreck (one

goal).

Alexi Kim refused to let opponents pass her and was assisted at

midfield by Natasha Daboub and Bridget Murphy.

Ava Soleimany and Caroline Fleet played solid at forward and

goalie and Maddie O’Connor retrieved the ball when it got away from

the offense. She was assisted on defense by Kimberly Billett and

Michaela Gentosi.

Paul O’Connor coached the team and was assisted by Michael

Schreck. Brooke Henderson was unable to make the final game.

In Girls under-8 play:

* The Green Bombers played their final game of the season against

the Bubble Gum Babes.

Grace Kennedy scored three goals while Jordan Castleton scored two

goals, one on an assist from Caitlin Cohn. Chelsea Chiapuzio,

Samantha DeVaney and Alex Benson each scored one goal and Hannah

Padilla provided added help.

Strong defense was provided by Sara Machoskie and Mary Brazer and

Sophia Chen provided steady play in goal.

In Boys under-7 play:

* The Yellow Tornadoes faced the Blue Tornadoes in the final

regular season game Saturday.

Sterling Beall and Matt Elmajian each scored two goals and Jake

Hastings added one score for the Yellow Tornadoes.

Andrew Larsen and Jared Daniels played solid for Coach Jim Wood’s

Tornadoes.

In Boys under-6 action:

* Blake Davidson scored four goals and Rorey Nicolson scored two

goals to lead the Killer Tigers. Davidson was the team’s leading

scorer.

Brett Davidson showed strong defense.
