OCC’s Pope sparkles in Regional, but she has bigger things on the

plate

Orange Coast College’s Marilyn Pope qualified to play the La

Purisma Golf Course in Lompoc at next week’s state championships

after shooting a 173 (81-92) over the two-day, 36 hole Southern

California Regional Championships completed Tuesday on the par-71

Hacienda Country Club in La Habra.

Pope qualified for the state tournament Nov. 17-18, but won’t play

because of a prior commitment -- she will be celebrating her 25th

wedding anniversary, said OCC Coach Barry Wallace.

“You can look at it two ways,” Wallace said. “I’d love to see her

compete at the state tournament with the way she’s playing. She’s

getting better and better with each match and can hold her own. But

she has other responsibilities and we all agree that the

(anniversary) is the most important thing.”

Pope’s 81 was the second lowest score, to a 79, for a single round

in the tournament.

Coast’s Joanne Durocher shot 100-96 -- 196 over the two-day

tournament.

No player broke 80 Tuesday.
