Wells, Butler sweep
Two former UC Irvine sailing team members, Peter Wells and Lanee
Butler, swept the U.S. Trials for the 2003 Pan American Games and
2003 Pre-Olympic Regatta in the Mistral Windsurfing division.
Wells, from the Class of ‘96, and Butler, from the Class of ‘93,
dominated their respective divisions, each winning the regatta
without having to sail the final race.
The trials were held last week in Florida at Jensen Beach,
featuring a three-day, seven-race series.
“There was a lot riding on this regatta,” said Wells. “Only one
man and one woman will represent the U.S. at the Pan-Am Games in the
Dominican Republic and the Pre-Olympics in Athens next summer.”
Wells, a dinghy national champion and three-time All-American
while at UCI, has been ranked No. 1 on he U.S. Sailing Team in the
Mistral class since 2000.
Butler holds the honor of being the only female athlete to
represent the U.S. in all three Olympic Games since a women’s
division was added in 1992. She finished fourth at Sydney in 2000.
