Sailors wrap up Sea View crown
Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team wrapped up the Sea
View League championship with a three-game victory over Foothill
Thursday at Newport Harbor High, 15-10, 15-5, 15-12.
Newport, 21-6, 9-1 in league, was led by Kristin McClune’s 16
kills followed by Lauren Miller’s eight kills and Alyson Jennings
(seven kills) and Shelley Langford (five kills). McClune also had
five ace serves and Kellie King contributed 47 assists.
“The kids played well and had a pretty good pace,” said Newport
Coach Dan Glenn. “They’re fired up for (tonight).”
The Sailors travel to Corona del Mar to play the Sea Kings tonight
(at 6) in both teams’ final regular season match.
VOLLEYBALL: CdM wraps up unbeaten PCL run
Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team completed an unbeaten
season in Pacific Coast League play Thursday, shelling visiting
Northwood, 15-7, 10-15, 15-10, 15-10 to run its record to 17-7, 10-0
in the PCL.
Claire Allen had 26 kills and five digs, Jordan Smith had nine
kills and five digs, Lindsay Ensign had 14 kills, and McKenzie
Conover and Ashley Bill shared setting duties.
TENNIS: Snyder-Holland reign in PCL
In an all-Corona del Mar High girls doubles tennis final, the
Pacific Coast League’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Taylynn Snyder and
Brittany Holland defeated the league’s No. 2 seeded doubles team of
sisters Anne and Rachel Yelsey of CdM, 6-2, 6-3, in the league finals
Thursday at Northwood High.
Snyder and Holland defeated a team from Laguna Beach, 6-0, 6-0, in
the semifinals Thursday and the Yelsey sisters defeated a University
team, 6-1, 6-0, earlier Thursday.
TENNIS: Lightning falls in semifinals
Sage Hill High freshmen Katie McKitterick and Kellie Ammerman
dropped singles semifinal matches in the Academy League Finals at
Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton Thursday, each to a St.
Margaret’s foe.
McKitterick fell to Laura Imre, 6-1, 6-0, and Ammerman lost to
Tiffany Huang, 6-3, 6-0.
Both Sage Hill girls are first-team All-Academy League, and
second-team honors went to Laura Webb, Danielle Berman, Jessica
Tsoong and Stephanie Chen.
VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill falls in five
Sage Hill High’s girls volleyball team lost its final match of the
season, an Academy League decision, in five games to Oxford Academy,
13-15, 15-10, 15-4, 3-15, 15-8, Thursday.
The Lightning (3-8, 1-7 in league) was led by Sophia Hillgren’s 12
kills and Shelley Smith’s eight kills.
Cat Dailey tallied seven kills, two aces and had two blocks for
Sage Hill.
