Havens captures Golden West title

Costa Mesa High senior Hilary Havens defeated April Shelley of
Orange, 6-1, 6-2, to win the Golden West League singles title
Wednesday at Ocean View High in Huntington Beach.
The Mustangs, who won the Golden West League team championship,
also had plenty to boast about in doubles, as it was an all-Mesa
final. Costa Mesa seniors Minh-Thy Pham and Chi Doan teamed up to
defeat fellow Mustang seniors Brenda Tran and Laura Fais, 6-0, 6-4.
Havens rolled through the tournament, dropping only three games on
her way to the league championship. Pham and Doan earned a 38-4
record this season, while Tran and Fais were 28-1.
Sea Kings’ doubles rolls into PCL semis
The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles seeds, Taylynn Snyder and Brittany
Holland and Anne and Rachel Yelsey, both from Corona del Mar High
School, won their two matches Wednesday to advance to today’s Pacific
Coast League girls tennis doubles semifinals at Northwood High at 1
p.m.
Snyder and Holland only lost one game in sweeping the two matches,
and the Yelsey sisters won, 6-2, 6-1, in the first match and then won
6-0, 6-0, in their second match Wednesday.
Snyder and Holland will play a team from University High and the
Yelsey sister will face the No. 3-seeded doubles team from Laguna
Beach, said CdM Coach Andy Stewart. Snyder and Holland beat CdM’s
Jackie Manning and Rachel Miller, 6-1, 6-0.
In singles, CdM’s Amanda Rubenstein, the seventh seed, won her
first match, 6-0, 6-0, but lost her second match to second seeded
Aimee Kim from University, 6-2, 6-1, and Juliette Mutzke rolled
through her first match but then lost, 7-5, 6-3, to No. 3-seed
Cameron Barron from Laguna Beach.
CdM’s Jasmine Steele, the No. 8 seed, lost in the first round in
three sets, dropping the last set, 6-4.
Newport’s McIntosh- Dunlap fall in finals
Newport Harbor High’s girls doubles duo of Krista McIntosh and
Vanessa Dunlap defeated a Aliso Niguel tandem, but lost in a
three-set tiebreaker to Foothill in the Sea View League Finals in
high school girls doubles tennis Wednesday at Nellie Gail Racquet
Club in San Clemente.
McIntosh and Dunlap defeated the Aliso Niguel combination, 6-1,
6-0, before facing Foothill’s tea, of Duesler-Colgrove in the league
doubles finals, which they narrowly lost, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (7-5).
Sage Hill’s Ammerman, McKitterick advance
Sage Hill High freshmen Kellie Ammerman and Katie McKitterick
advanced to today’s singles semifinals at the Academy League Finals
at Sunny Hills Racquet Club in Fullerton with victories on Wednesday.
Ammerman eliminated Lenna Grosheh of Capistrano Valley Christian,
6-0, 6-2, and McKitterick blanked Christine Chang of Fairmont, 6-0,
6-0, in the first round. Ammerman followed up with a 6-1, 6-1 win
over Jennifer Harris of Capistrano Valley Christian, and McKitterick
defeated Lauren Pasquarelli of St. Margaret’s, 6-1, 6-3.
Teammate Paige Fuller dropped a 6-1, 6-2 first-round decision to
Annie Lu of Whitney.
In doubles play, Jessica Tsoong and Stephanie Chen were 6-0, 6-2
first-round winners over Chan-Khara of Fairmont, but fell in the
quarterfinals to Capistrano Valley Christian’s Trowbridge and Wood,
6-3, 6-1.
Danielle Berman and Laura Webb were 6-1, 6-4 winners over Oxford
Academy’s Chung-Kwak entry, but they fell in the doubles quarters to
Valenti/Reisenwerber of St. Margaret’s, 6-1, 6-2.
