Anteaters sweep up Fullerton

UC Irvine’s women’s volleyball team improved to .500 in the Big
West Conference with a 30-18, 30-27, 30-19 victory over rival Cal
State Fullerton Saturday night in Crawford Hall.
Kelly Wing led UCI with 21 kills, while Rebecca Larsen and Dana
Kurzbad had 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
Senior Chanda McLeod led the defensive effort with 17 digs, while
Wing followed with 12. Libero Brenda Waterman added 11 digs and
setter Ashlie Hain had 49 assists.
UCI improves to 13-9, 6-6 in the Big West.

SOCCER: UCI, Titans tie
Cal State Fullerton and the host UC Irvine Anteaters battled to a
1-1 tie in Big West Conference men’s soccer action Saturday night at
Anteater Stadium.
Sean Iliff scored in the early going off an assist from Scott
Bowman, and Fullerton answered in the 30th minute.
Fullerton is now 6-7-3, 2-2-2 in the Big West. UCI is 6-6-3,
1-2-2.

SOCCER: Vanguard wins
Vanguard University’s men’s soccer team completed a four-game
winning streak Saturday night, dealing Hope International a 3-0
Golden State Athletic Conference defeat.
The Lions got a goal from freshman Andrew Sundset in the first
half with an assist from sophomore Armando Ortiz.
Matt Hess scored his 21st goal of the season in the second half on
an assist from James Grigas, and Nate Kramer put the icing on with a
goal at the 78:18 mark off an assist from Hess.
The Lions finish the season 8-12 after starting with an 0-4
record. Vanguard completes its GSAC season with a 4-6 record.

SWIMMING: Big West Shootout
At UC Irvine, the second of the two-day Big West Shootout in men’s
and women’s swimming, the University of Hawaii was the men’s champion
and Washington ruled the roost in women’s competition.
Among UCI winners over the course of the day were Hazem Amr in the
men’s 50-yard freestyle (21.71), Bomb Pattanasinth in the 200
individual medley (1:55.90), Robert Noh in the 1,000 free (9:44.03)
and 500 free (4:46.47), Gonny Shimura in the 200 backstroke
(1:52.74), Brian Kim in the 200 breaststroke (2:05.95) and Anton
Slobounov in three-meter diving.

SOCCER: Lions win, 5-2
Vanguard University’s women’s soccer team finished out the regular
season with a 5-2 victory over visiting Hope International.
The Lions, 8-7-3, 5-4-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference,
were paced by Janelle Doyle, who had two assists and one goal.
Jenae Welch scored twice and Bryanna Gonzales and Alexsis Newbold
delivered goals for the Lions.
