Breakers hold onto share of first

The 2002 Pacific Coast League girls’ tennis race is going down to

the wire, and it appears to be a three-team race to the finish.

Laguna Beach is one of two teams to share the league lead.

The Breakers, with Corona del Mar, hold down first place in the

standings following a 16-2 win over visiting Calvary Chapel Tuesday.

The Breakers and Sea Kings were 7-1 in league play heading into

matches played on Thursday.

Laguna Beach had two singles players and two doubles teams sweep

their Calvary Chapel opponents.

At No. 2 singles, Claire Rietsch won by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and

6-0, and Lorren Butterwick, at No. 3, posted scores of 6-1, 6-0 and

6-0.

The Breakers’ No. 1 doubles team of Jackie Reed and Jessica Murray

won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and the No. 2 tandem of Britton Simons and Katie

Ochwat won by scores of 6-2, 6-2, 6-1.

Laguna Beach stepped out of PCL play Wednesday to face Peninsula

in a nonleague match, then returned to league action on Thursday to

host Tesoro.

On Monday, the Breakers will visit second-place University in a

key PCL matchup.

In boy’s water polo, Laguna Beach drilled league rival Northwood,

11-4, behind the six-goal scoring of Nic McConnell. Bryan Early

posted two goals and Hugh Sandys recorded 12 saves for the Breakers.

In girls’ volleyball, Laguna Beach suffered two league defeats.

The Breakers were upended by Corona del Mar on Oct. 23 and last

Tuesday, suffered a 15-7, 15-2, 15-2 road loss to PCL leader

Northwood.
