Film fest to screen

‘Sordid Lives’ as benefit

The Newport Beach Film Festival will hold a special screening of

“Sordid Lives” at 11 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Lido Theater as a benefit

for Laguna Shanti. Members of the cast and crew will appear for the

event, part of the festival’s year-round Spotlight Series.

“Sordid Lives” stars Leslie Jordan, Delta Burke, Olivia

Newton-John, Bonnie Bedelia and Beau Bridges in a story about an

eccentric Texas family that comes together for a funeral.

Writer-director Del Shores will appear at the screening, along with

Jordan and producer Sharon Lane.

The Lido Theater is at 3459 Via Lido Drive, Newport Beach. Tickets

are $10 for the screening or $25 for the screening and the VIP post

‘My Fair Lady’ to be highlight of ArtsWeek

UC Irvine’s sixth annual ArtsWeek will start Nov. 9 and end Nov.

16 with a black-tie gala and a student performance of the Broadway

musical “My Fair Lady.” The event celebrates the Claire Trevor School

of the Arts.

During the intermission of “My Fair Lady,” Claire Trevor’s Academy

Award and Emmy will be presented to the school by Donald Bren,

Trevor’s stepson and chairman of The Irvine Company. The two awards

will be permanently displayed in the theater.

Scholarships, exhibitions and art will be funded by the money

raised from the benefit. In addition to the musical, ArtsWeek will

feature a faculty art exhibit, a symphony orchestra performance and

an evening of movies starring Trevor -- “Key Largo” and “Stagecoach.”

The “My Fair Lady” benefit will be held 5 p.m. Nov. 16. Tickets

Youth Expo goes ‘Once Upon a Vine’ in theme

Tomatoes and fairy tales combine for the theme of the 2003 Youth

Expo, “Once Upon a Vine -- Salute to Tomatoes and Magical Gardens.”

The theme was approved at the Oct. 24 meeting of the Orange County

Fair’s board of directors.

The Youth Expo, a nonprofit educational fair that celebrates

children from kindergarten to high school, will be held May 2 to 4,

2003. Students enter projects such as crafts, creative writing, fine

arts, murals and photographs in competition. Many use the theme as a

basis for their work.
