Sowers’ Vikings rout Corona del Mar
The Sowers Middle School girls basketball program continues to
roll through league competition.
The Vikings’ eighth-grade girls’ team stayed unbeaten following a
39-18 win over Corona del Mar, and the seventh grade team beat the
same opponent by a 27-4 score.
The eighth-grade girls ran their record to 4-0 as three-year
starter Audra Tamulaitis hit four of five shots and scored eight
points.
With those eight points, Tamulaitis became the school’s all-time
scoring leader.
Brittany Hooton made the most of her first start of the season by
matching Tamulaitis and Jacque Anderson for high scoring honors at
eight points.
Simone Ibbotson had 12 rebounds to pace Sowers on the boards.
It was Ibbotson’s third double-figure rebounding game of the
season.
Lindsay Baker contributed seven points to the victory.
The Vikings’ seventh-grade squad improved to 3-1 by whipping
Corona del Mar (2-2). Leading all scorers with eight points was
Natalie Ball, starting in place of Leslie De Jesus, who was out with
the flu.
Mary Madden cleared the boards for the Vikings with seven
rebounds.
Point guards Kelsey Hwang and Michelle Yamasaki led Sowers on
defense.
Lady Vikings Take Two From Costa Mesa
Sowers claimed sole possession of first place in the eighth-grade
standings last Tuesday by routing previously undefeated Costa Mesa,
34-11, on the Mustangs’ home court.
Jacque Anderson came off the bench to ignite the Lady Vikings, her
quickness allowed her to lead all scorers with nine points.
Kari Pestolesi had 10 rebounds and six steals and Lauren
Kaprielian had five assists.
The victory put Sowers win streak at 11 games over two seasons.
The Sowers seventh-grade girls also defeated Costa Mesa, 35-15,
with nine different players getting into the scoring act.
Bree Williston, who started for the Vikings as a sixth-grader last
season, had six points, five rebounds and five steals. Nicole
Miller’s all-around performance included four points, six rebounds,
three assists and three steals, and Leslie De Jesus led a tough,
scrappy defense and led the Lady Viking fastbreak.
