Smurfs come alive
Will Reichenstein tallied two goals and an assist to lead the
Slammin’ Smurfs to a four-goal win over the Beach Bums Saturday at
Kaiser School in Costa Mesa in boys under-14 soccer action.
The Smurfs used accurate passes to score goals, getting
contributions from several players, including Branden Rowley, Chris
Gutierrez, Andrew Kaban and Kyle Caldwell, who all scored one goal in
the Region 97 duel.
Caldwell and Kaban assisted on Reichenstein’s two goals.
The Smurfs used three goalkeepers, Tommy Olson, Gutierrez and Rex
Nelson, to stop Beach Bum shots and moved the ball upfield to Robert
DiFrancesco and Kyle Fults.
Sean Marshall, Edgar Torres and David Garrett played strong
defense.
In another boys 14-and-under game:
* Saints 3, The Who 2
The Who received first-half goals from Tobin Olson and Jamie
Gayley, but the Saints edged out the win.
The Who’s goaltending team of Juan Trujillo and Timothy Regan each
made four saves and were helped on defense by Brandon Parole,
Christian Harrison and Michael Perkins.
Nick Normandin, Travis Kuhns and Will Atwood had several shots on
goal and Jacob Silverman and Vinnie Finn played strong at midfield.
In Girls under-12 action:
* Blue Crush 4, Bruisers 1
Three goals from Brianna Schwartz on passes from Brittany Harris,
Kayla Greely and Olivia Drummond helped the Blue Crush knock off the
Bruisers.
The Crush jumped out to a one-goal lead in the first quarter with
a pass from Spencer Smith to Tori Browne for the goal.
Bridget Terrebonne and Laura Catron each made some diving stops in
net and Caitlin Tona, Hannah Weiner and Kaely Turney played strong
defense.
Maranda Ruiz, Kristin Burger and Jade Bird supported the team.
In Boys under-12 play:
* Blue Man Group 2, Rebels 1
The second-place Blue Man Group defeated first-place Rebels, 2-1,
Saturday at Kaiser School on single goals from forward Adrian
Rodriguez and Kody Lawton and steady goalkeeping by Kyle Evans, who
made six saves in two quarters defending the goal.
Blue Man Group members include Alex Arthur, Austin Denike, Keiffer
Edmonstron, Evans, Trevor Hensley, Taylor Hensley, Alex Hilton, E.J.
Kehoe, Lawton, Tristan Lobdell, John MacBeth, Charlie Normandin,
Rodriguez and Andrew Wilkey.
* Rebels 3, Bruins 0
Evan Call scored his first goal of the season and the Rebels added
two more to shut out the Bruins.
Call and Tim Barela both scored off corner kicks and William Munoz
scored off a kick from outside the penalty area to cap the Rebel
scoring. Forwards Eric Holland and Corey Bell-Wheelans help set up
the goals.
Rebel midfielders Nick Vlahakis, Cameron Conway, Joshua Duerhing
and Alex Allione covered the midfield and distributed the ball to
begin Rebel attacks while Rebel goalkeepers John Ryder and Levi Rowe
played solid in front of a defense of Jeff Fichtner, Munoz and Nathan
Dickey, who regained control of the ball and moved it upfield.
* Hurricanes 2, Patriots 1
Behind two goals from Easton Giedt and some fine defense, the
Hurricanes got past the Patriots.
Christian Scott and Robbie Hampton assisted on Giedt’s goals and
the Hurricane defense stopped many Patriot scoring chances.
A defensive header by Jordan McLaren in the first quarter and
hustle by J.P. Muller, Harrison Faigen, Simon Hedrick, Morgan Lintz,
Derek Boler and Justin McLaren kept the Patriots at-bay.
Jay Ordaz scored for the Patriots and Christopher Cowie, Chris O’
Campo, Jackson Carmack and Randall Hause made solid passes.
Midfielders Peter Nguyen, Tommy Freeman, Joshua Bowman, Preston
Wheeler and Jay Wilson kept the ball at their opponents’ end much of
the game.
Strong defense was provided by Wil Curiel, Daron Arnold, Irving
Torres and Spencer Baratto.
Wheeler, Wilson and Bowman shared time in goal.
* Panthers 2, Patriots 0
The Panthers scored two late goals to roll to the victory despite
strong offensive play by Nguyen, Cowie, Torres and Carmack.
Midfielders Barrato, Arnold, Freeman, Wilson and Bowman supported
the Patriots and defense by Curiel, Ordaz, O’Campo and Hause kept the
ball in play.
Wilson and Bowman shared goalkeeper duties.
Grady Kough and Mick Sheehan made some key plays.
In Girls under-11 APP Plus action:
* Newport 1, Yorba Linda 1 A goal by Newport’s Kelly Heenan in the final minute equalized the
Yorba Linda goal and the teams tied.
Newport gave up a goal in the second minute of play, but played
steady defense to hold Yorba Linda scoreless the rest of the game.
Newport had its chances as well. Paige Moore missed a shot and
Natalie Arguella hit the post with a shot with five minutes
remaining.
McKenna Cottam, Caroline Hardenbergh, Kasey DeYoung and Kristy
Jacobs helped hold Yorba Linda to one goal and Elizabeth Eddy,
Marianne Jones, Terra Friedman and Claire and Kimmy Ramser all played
strong defense.
In Girls under-10 action:
* Quicksilver 5, Bratz 3
The Bratz suffered their second loss of the season after a
second-half rally that came up short.
Courtney McIntosh scored two goals and Maria Swift scored one goal
for the Bratz and Milena Buonanoce had one assist.
Claire Castillo, Sophia Leveque, Madelaine Gallardo, Brenna
Landstrom, Alexandra Kehoe, Kelly Kindgren, Zoe Sanglerat and Katie
Escher contributed for the Bratz.
* Blue Angels 8, Peppermint Twist 0
Four players found the back of the net twice for the Blue Crush as
they shut out Peppermint Twist to improve to 8-0.
Madison Wooters scored her first two goals of the season and was
helped by the scoring of Blakeley Ficenec, Josie Jogwe and Beth
Barnard.
Sadie Evans, Amanda Rogers and Sarah Tegel played solid at
midfield and Biz Buckingham and Kathryn Zimmerman set up scoring
opportunities.
* Blue Blasters 1, Green Hornets 1
Natalie Swift scored the tying goal in the final minutes with help
from Stephanie Verheyen for the Blue Blasters against the Green
Hornets.
Tight defense was provided by Charlotte Skjonsby, Swift and Kate
Batstone kept the Green Hornets at one goal while Reanne Nathan
relieved Jamie Fredrickson in goal so Fredrickson could play forward.
Joanne Cornejo, Veronica Seidner and Holly Kelly plugged up the
middle and kept the ball in the Hornets’ end.
Cindy Mejia and Amanda Peterson took several shots on goal for the
Blasters.
In Boys under-10 play:
* The Dragons won their game Saturday, 4-1, with Dylan Pievac
scoring two goals and Matthew Francini and Austin Pollard each adding
one goal.
Carl Hastings, Max Weinberg and Charlie Howarth played solid
defense and Josh Harrison played steady in goal.
* Fighting Ninjas 1, Blue Blasters 0
The Fighting Ninjas made strong passes that keyed Matthew
Buchanan’s winning goal supported by Jake Turner and James Jarvis.
A stingy Ninjas’ defense held the Blasters scoreless behind Ryan
Ridley, Dustin Ayres and Zach Buie and Stevie Michaelson and Grant
Frazier made several saves in goal.
Turner, Taylor Wildman, Michaelson and Buie also had several shots
on goal and Cody Caldwell and Nathan Bryant provided midfield support
for the Ninjas.
The Blue Blasters had several players create scoring opportunities
including Misha Pakvasa, Paul Weisinger, C.J. Tona, Paul Tadross,
Caleb Candelaria, Jake Likich, Trey Franklin, Corey Fults, Ryan
Shannon and Craig McKennon. Brecht Van’t Hof and Candelaria played
sweeper and Shannon, Likich and Candelaria all made multiple saves as
goalkeeper.
* Blue Bombers 1, Galaxy 1
The Blue Bombers received a goal from Marco Urquiza and Adam
Kinder scored a goal for the Galaxy.
The Blue Bombers threatened with two shots that hit the crossbar
from Nolan Mena on a free kick and Ryan Davidson.
Ethan Murray, David Vorona and Gus Moore assisted the Blaster
offense and Kyle Regan, Slayter Stanley and Jack Murrell controlled
the midfield.
Strong defense was played by Nicolas Jaber and Brodi Beal.
In Girls under-8 play:
* Bluewater Dolphins vs. Surfer Girls
Bluewater was led offensively by Carly Christian, Vanessa Seznol,
Samantha Small and Nicolette Powell while the Surfer Girls were led
by Riley Beek and Shannon Wells.
The Dolphin defense was led by Page Keys, Maddie Collins, Konner
Speth and Keri Hancock while the Surfer Girls were led by Maddie
Fromme.
* The Zooming Zebras were led by accurate passes and the defense
of Hanna Mumm, Sally Fuller, Catherine Connelly and Catherine
Boettner.
Goalie Sara Hamilton and sweeper Sarah Daly kept the opposition
at-bay while Cinnamon Sary, Nicole Fitzsimmons and Delaney McCardle
were the top scorers.
* The Mighty Tigers and Panthers fought each other until the end
with the Tigers’ Emma Howard scoring the final goal at the buzzer.
Taylor Chapin assisted Sarah Zomaya on the Tigers’ first goal and
Ricki Archie scored the Tigers’ second goal after stealing the ball
and taking it down the field.
Alison Palaferri played solid defense and denied a last-minute
Tiger shot.
In Boys under-8 action:
* The Golden Snitches battled the Devil Rays in a defensive
battle.
Izaak Lofgren and Nicholas Justice cleared the ball on defense for
the Snitches and Peter Tadross played well at midfield with Nick
Shahidi, Steve Keenan and Pierce Ward passing well.
Chase Kapana displayed fine ball-handling skills and Craig Borth
covered in goal.
* Panthers vs. Spitfire
The Spitfire’s Ishmael Alkayali’s six goals highlighted the
Spitfire offense, who also got strong play from Ellery Sever, Theo
Boistel, Nick Vieira, Kurt Walde and Landon Gyulay, who made
effective passes and showed ball control.
Kevin Rakestraw, Parker Martinez and Eric Mejia each regained
possession for the Spitfire and James Newman made some targeted
throw-ins.
For the Panthers, Clay Smythe provided strong goaltending and R.J.
Roberts, Scott Sexton and Kyle Benter hustled on both sides of the
field. Michael Reo, Riley Peterson and Gordon Lewis pushed the ball
on offense and Tyler Schwartz, Tyler Farrell, Braden Delannoy and
Carter Yonkers stopped the Spitfire’s offense.
In Girls under-7 action:
* Red Hot Firecrackers vs. Blue Crush
Firecracker goals were scored by Katie Donald, Alana Courier and
Analysa Vivanco and Emily Conant, Cortlynn Clement, Rosalie Deliz and
Hailey Oberst contributed to the win.
Andie Strode and Savannah Gardner played strong defense. Diana
Fujii did not play.
* Carolyn Bockrath scored the first goal for the Blue Crush and
added several shots on goal and got help from Natalie Teale, Madison
Lanting, Juila Frie, Carley Searcy and Dana Jessen.
* Green Cheetahs vs. Blue Dolphins
Olivia Muscatello scored multiple goals and Megan Daly added
another goal for the Cheetahs.
Steady defense was provided by Emily Nall, Sydney Kohlenberger and
Gabriella Parisi to hold off the Blue Dolphins.
In Boys under-7 play:
* Laser Dragons vs. Blue Blasters
Rian Atherton and Joey Gregory didn’t allow a goal and got
defensive support from Grant Moore, Shaun Vetrovec and J.J. Von
Ahlefeld.
Forwards Garrett Byers, Cole Chapin, Peter Kwock and Jack
Williamson led the offensive charge.
* Blue Dragons vs. Predators
The Dragons got support from Zachary Buggelin, Ivan Dhuy, Jacob
Farwell and Samuel Jones in their game against the Predators
Saturday.
Timothy Rojas, Jackson Sanders and Marco Bruscia moved the ball
upfield and Christian Sandoval, Bryan Shollin and Derek Sweet played
steady soccer.
* The Cheetahs vs. Strikers
The Strikers got solid ball movement from Brandt Bucher and Nick
Roman and Kody Wensley and Brooks O’Hea made effective passes at
midfield enabling Mario Nark and Cameron Hall to score goals.
Marcell DeBarros and Daniel O’Toole played steady defense and Marc
Gehlke was kept busy in goal.
In Girls under-6 action:
* The Green Girlillas continued their strong play, getting goals
from three different players in their game Saturday.
Lila McElroy started the scoring in the first period and Peyton
Espley Jones added a left-footer to the back of the net in the third
quarter. Jaynie Hexberg stopped many scoring opportunities at both
ends of the field and stole the ball and ran down the field to score
the Girlillas’ final goal.
Libby Knight hustled to stop breakaways and missed several scoring
chances by inches. Ashley Ammerman and Jill Hilton played strong
defense, denying many scoring opportunities.
* The Silver Dolphins vs. Grasshoppers
Kate Pipkin, Carlee Kapana and Mackenzie Gaddis scored goals on
assists from Rowan Fredrickson, Kelley McFetters and Amanda Sheppard
for the Silver Dolphins.
Key defensive plays were made by Abbey Pickett, Alyssa Quintero,
Gabby Mangano and Rachel Whitelegge.
In Boys under-6 play:
* Shooters vs. Speedy Snakes
The Shooters came out firing against the Speedy Snakes, getting
three goals from three different players.
Davis Hanscom connected for the Shooters’ first goal in the second
period followed by John Connelly’s goal in the third quarter and
Mikey Lugo’s goal with three seconds remaining in the game.
Griffith Clawson consistently brought the ball up the field for
the Shooters.
* Shooters vs. Firestorm
Connelly continued his steady play with another goal for the
Shooters and Landon Knight and Hanscom combined for another score
against the Firestorm.
Lugo and Clawson displayed effective ball control.
* Ben Bockrath connected for three goals and Blake Jessen scored
a long-range goal on his birthday for the Green Hornets.
* The Tornados vs. The Gators
Jehu Jogwe, Kyle Moran, Peter Seidner and Tristan Manning scored
goals for the Tornados and Cooper Peters and Jack Maskrey played
solid defense throughout against the Gators.
