Newport Beach Police on Oct. 24 arrested two Inglewood men in
connection with an Oct. 11 home burglary, officials said Wednesday.
John Derek Hickman, 41, and Desean Dwight Newman, 20, were
arrested in Inglewood after an investigation, said Sgt. Steve Shulman
of the Newport Beach Police Department.
Police on Oct. 11 responded to the call from the 4200 block of
Shorecrest Drive after a resident reported that a burglar awakened
him, he said.
“The resident said the burglar ran from the home, but we were not
able to find him,” Shulman said. Cash, jewelry and other items valued
at about $2,700 were reported stolen from the home.
He said Hickman was believed to have been involved with the Corona
del Mar burglary, but police also arrested Newman after they found
him in a car containing what they believed to be stolen property from
other home burglaries in Brentwood. Items stolen from Newport Beach
have not been recovered yet.
Police tracked down Hickman after crime scene investigators found
his fingerprint at the scene and then matched it with the statewide
fingerprint identification system that promptly showed Hickman was a
parolee, Shulman said.
Hickman reportedly cut a screen and entered the home by opening a
sliding door, he said.
Both men are being held in lieu of a $25,000 bail.
Any witnesses who may have heard or seen anything the morning of
the burglary that occurred near Coast Highway and Morning Canyon Road
are asked to call Newport Beach Police Det. Jay Short at (949)
644-3790.
