Newport puts away Warriors
Newport Harbor High’s boys water polo team stayed undefeated in
the Sea View League with a 15-5 win over Woodbridge in a league match
Wednesday at Newport Harbor.
Charlie Hockenberry led the Sailors with five goals, four coming
in the second period with Newport building an 11-2 halftime lead.
Four Newport players scored two goals apiece including Clay Jorth,
Sean McGhie, Morgan Laidlaw and Michael Bury.
Brodie Curtis and Brent Armstrong each tallied single goals for
the Sailors, who improved to 14-6, 3-0 in the Sea View League.
Newport was active at the defensive end as well, making 20 steals
with Andrew Belden leading the Sailors with five and Ross Sinclair
and McGhie each with four steals. Gavin Schmidt added two steals and
Jay Thompson, Bury, Curtis and Bryan Auer each added one steal.
Sinclair led the team with three assists and Trevor Gregory also
had an assist.
Sailor goalkeeper Nathan McLain saved seven shots and made one
steal.

CORONA DEL MAR -- Northwood High offered little resistance in a
Pacific Coast League boys water polo game at Corona del Mar
Wednesday, falling behind by a 7-0 count in the first quarter as the
Sea Kings coasted to a 14-5 victory.
Artie Dorr and Jason DiRocco each scored four goals and David
Niehenke chipped in with three scores.
Corona del Mar, now 13-6, 3-0 in the PCL, travels to San Jose to
compete in the NorCal Tournament this weekend.
