Chalk up another duathlon victory for Costa Mesa resident Sue
Davis. The 40-year-old won the Masters Division for amateurs in a
duathlon at the International Triathlon Union World Duathlon
Championships Oct. 19 in Alpharetta, Ga.
Davis, who has competed in duathlons for 12 years, completed the
10K run, 40K bike and 5K run. She placed third overall among amateurs
and was the second American to finish the race that featured several
hundred international athletes.
A former Corona del Mar High Athlete of the Year (she played girls
volleyball) and a member of Irvine Valley College’s cross country
team that won a state championship, she won the world championships
in duathlon in the 35-39 age division.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL: Unbeaten UCSB sweeps Anteaters
Host UC Santa Barbara was a 30-28, 30-17, 30-26 winner over UC
Irvine Saturday night in Big West Conference women’s volleyball.
UC Irvine, which fell to 11-9, 4-6 in the Big West, was led by
Kelly King (16 kills), Chanda McLeod (15 kills) and Dana Kurzbard (10
kills), but it was not enough to offset the host Gauchos, who
improved to a flawless 21-0, 11-0 record.

CROSS COUNTRY: Newport Harbor girls sparkle at Mt. SAC
Newport Harbor High junior Lauren Paul and sophomore Courtney
Marshall stood out for the Sailors in the girls’ Division II
competition at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational Saturday.
Paul was 16th in her division with a time of 19:17 over the
three-mile course, while Marshall was 18th, clocking a 19:19. Also
with solid times were Andi Sarris (20:56) and Caitllin Mai (21:13).

JC WATER POLO: OCC men win twice at Saddleback Tournament
Orange Coast College’s Pirates got past Miramar, 17-8, then took
fifth place with an 8-7 decision over El Camino at the Saddleback
College Men’s Water Polo Tournament Saturday.

CROSS COUNTRY: Vanguard men and women at GSAC Championships
Vanguard University’s men’s cross country team finished fourth at
the Golden State Athletic Conference Championships Saturday behind
champion Azusa Pacific.
The Lions’ efforts were keyed by the runs of Mikael Larsson (ninth
at 26:24), Tony Magana (13th at 26:37), Matt Meyer (18th at 27:09),
Steve Lalia (24th at 27:43), Edel Lopez (30th at 28:04) and John
Nelson (31st at 28:08) in the 8K event.
In the women’s 5K, Vanguard was seventh behind champion Azusa
Pacific. Vanguard’s scoring runners were Jennie Thune (seventh at
18:50), Sarah Hall (18th at 19:09, Elizabeth Huipe (30th at 19:59),
Bridget Lonsdale (45th at 21:28) and Carrie McIntyre (53rd at 22:36.
