Chargers, Barons go at it again
It’s nearing the end of a big week on the Edison and Fountain
Valley campuses, and school spirit is coming to a fever pitch in
anticipation of Friday’s key Sunset League battle between these two
fierce rivals.
The Chargers and Barons will renew that rivalry at Orange Coast
College’s LeBard Stadium. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
Fans are advised to get there early, as the annual game always
draws a standing-room-only crowd to the 7,500 seat stadium.
While the game has significance in terms of jockeying for position
in the Sunset League standings, the more coveted prize is The Bell,
which annually goes to the winner of this game.
Edison (2-4, 0-1) has been the proud owner of The Bell for two
straight years, wresting it away after Fountain Valley’s five-year
stranglehold.
The Barons, who at one time this season were 0-4, have won two
straight, including last weekend’s 21-14 overtime victory over Marina
in a Sunset League opener.
Corey Andreason threw the last of his two touchdown passes in
overtime, connecting with Juan Cachua from 25 yards out.
Edison, meanwhile, was tied 14-14 at the half with Esperanza last
week but was outscored, 22-0, in the second half, and ended up on the
short end of a 31-14 score against the Aztecs.
The Chargers are looking to end a losing streak at three games by
extending their win streak to three games over the Barons.
Last year’s score: Edison 19, Fountain Valley 10

In Friday’s other game:
Marina (2-4, 0-1) vs. Huntington Beach (4-2, 0-1)
(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)
It’s homecoming on the Huntington Beach campus this week, and city
rival Marina is the night’s opponent.
While Marina is coming off a tough 21-14 overtime loss to Fountain
Valley, Huntington Beach is trying to recover from a 42-21 loss to
Los Alamitos in which the Oilers hung tough with the Griffins for one
half.
Oiler running back Patrick Harrigan again topped the 300-yard
rushing mark, this time gaining 317 on a whopping 48 attempts.
Last year’s score: Marina 24, Huntington Beach 20

Saturday’s Game:
Ocean View (1-5, 0-2) vs. Santa Ana (5-1, 2-0)
(at Santa Ana Bowl, 7 p.m.)
Ocean View will try to win its first Golden West League game
against one of the league’s co-leaders.
An opportunistic Santa Ana team capitalized on turnovers and
mistakes last Friday to drill Estancia, 38-0. Rene Candelas, a
running back who also handles kicking chores, scored on a 60-yard
pass, a seven-yard run, connected on a 32-yard field goal and had a
60-yard punt.
Ocean View has dropped three straight, the most recent being a
35-12 loss to Westminster in which Andre Valenzuela rushed for 124
yards and a touchdown.
Last year’s score: Ocean View 14, Santa Ana 7
