Costa Mesa High girls tennis team moved a step closer to winning
the Golden West League title with an 11-7 victory over Estancia High
Tuesday.
The Mustangs, 9-5, 9-1 in the Golden West League, face Westminster
Thursday at Costa Mesa High at 3 p.m. with a chance to win the
league, said Costa Mesa Coach Joe Havens.
Estancia falls to 8-3 in league.
Costa Mesa’s No. 1 singles player, Hilary Havens swept, as did
Mesa’s No. 1 and 2 doubles teams of Brenda Tran and Laura Fais and
Minh Thy Pham and Chi Doan.

TENNIS: Tars post 10-8 victory
Krista McIntosh and Vanessa Dunlap both swept their sets as did
the doubles tandem of Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson for Newport Harbor
High’s girls tennis team to help defeat host Aliso Niguel Tuesday,
10-8, in a Sea View League match.
McIntosh gave Newport a 9-8 lead and Dunlap finished off the match
with her three-set win for the Sailors, 9-4, 5-1 in the Sea View
League. Aliso falls to 3-3 in league.

WATER POLO: Sailors roll, 16-7
Newport Harbor High’s Sailors were 16-7 winners in nonleague boys
water polo Tuesday in the winner’s pool.
Michael Bury led the way with six goals. Ross Sinclair added three
goals and seven others, Nathan Weiner, Bryan Auer, Charlie
Hockenbury, Brent Armstrong, Clay Jorth, Jay Thompson and Brodie
Curtis, each scored once.
Michael Robinson was credited with 10 saves for the Sailors, who
improved to 13-5 overall. The Sailors host Laguna Hills today.
POLO: Orange tops Eagles, 12-6
The Estancia High boys water polo team was overpowered by Orange
hole man Phil Pease as well as Panthers goalie David Viveros as the
Eagles dropped a crucial Golden West League contest, 12-6, Tuesday at Estancia.
Pease scored eight goals, despite extra defensive attention from
Estancia (6-10, 2-3 in league), while Viveros helped foil quality
scoring chances with nine saves to help Orange improve to 4-1 in
league.
Jess Hellmich paced the Eagles with three goals, while Nathan
Marstellar (seven saves) earned praise for his performance from Coach
John Carpenter.
POLO: Costa Mesa rolls, 12-7
Brian Tipton scored eight goals to lead Costa Mesa High boys water
polo team to a 12-7 Golden West League win over visiting Westminster
Tuesday.
Adam Douglas scored three goals and Christian Darnas scored one
goal for the Mustangs, who scored eight second-half goals.
Goalkeeper Matt Jaroslawski made 13 saves for Mesa.
POLO: CdM falls to Servite, 6-4
Four different players scored goals for Corona del Mar High’s boys
water polo team, but it wasn’t enough to beat Servite, ranked No. 2
in CIF Southern Section Division II, at CdM High Tuesday and the
Friars won, 6-4.
Artie Dorr, John Money, John Mann and Kevin Amendt scored goals
for the Sea Kings,12-6, 2-0 in the Pacific Coast League and No. 3 in
CIF Division I, and Beau Stockstill made 12 saves in net.
The Friars scored four second-half goals to CdM’s two. The Friars
had double the ejections CdM had, 8-4, but held on for the win.
David DiRocco made three steals and brother Jason DiRocco and
Griffin Gentry had two steals apiece for the Sea Kings.
VOLLEYBALL: Tars win in four
Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team was an 11-15, 15-4,
15-7, 15-6 winner over Sea View League host Foothill Tuesday night,
highlighted by Alyson Jennings’ performance, which included 10 kills
and seven ace serves.
Kristin McClune was the kill leader for Newport, 16-6, 4-1 in the Sea View League.
TENNIS: CdM wins on games
Corona del Mar High’s doubles tandem of Brittany Holland and
Juliette Mutzke won all three sets, losing only two games, to lead
the Sea Kings to a 9-9 tie with visiting Laguna Beach Tuesday, but
CdM pulled out the win on games, 70-68.
“We were down 9-8, but (Rachel) Yelsey and (Jasmine) Steele beat
their No. 1 doubles team, 6-3, that was key,” said CdM Coach Andy
Stewart. “This was a big match.”
CdM improves to 10-2, 5-1 in the Pacific Coast League and No. 7 in
CIF Southern Section Division I, while Laguna, No. 8 in CIF Division
I, falls to 4-2 in league.

SOCCER: OCC men win, 5-3
The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team rallied from a 2-0
deficit to claim a 5-3 Orange Empire Conference victory at Santiago
Canyon Tuesday.
Derek Martell converted an assist by Juan Cervantes to pull OCC to
within 2-1, then Joel Sotolongo scored on the first of two assists by
Jarred Zitt to knot the score in the 40th minute. OCC’s comeback was
aided by a red card charged to Santiago Canyon that left the Hawks a
man short for about the final 78 minutes.
Six minutes into the second half, Steve Jennings scored on an
assist from Steve Velanoweth and Stan Duck and Cervantes rounded out
the Pirates’ scoring.
OCC improved to 12-3-2, 5-1-2 in conference, while Santiago Canyon
fell to 3-5-3 in conference.
CROSS COUNTRY: SH boys sparkle
Sage Hill High’s boys cross country team led the Lightning boys
and girls contingent at Tuesday’s tri-meet against Academy League
foes Oxford Academy and Capistrano Valley Christian by beating Capo
Valley, 28-29, at Eldorado Park.
Chris Chiboucas placed fifth overall with a 17:30 to lead the
Lightning, 2-4, 1-3 in the Academy League. Zach Chandy finished
seventh with a 17:32 and 9th Tim Lefler took ninth with 17:54.
Tristan Cordier placed 15th overall with 18:33 and Mike Voge finished
18th in 18:38. The boys lost to Oxford, 21-38.
The girls, 0-6, 0-4 in league, lost to Oxford, 15-50, and Capo
Valley, 25-32, with Kelsey Rose taking 12th overall with a 23:12
followed by Alis Brito’s 23:34, good for 15th place.
Sarah Cowan ran to 21st place in 25:37 and Yao Lopez took 25th
with 27:50, Ashley Negrette finished 27th in 28:31.
GOLF: Sailors’ Draganza sharp
Newport Harbor High freshman Natalie Draganza shot 6-over-par 42
to capture medalist honors and lead the Sailors to a 247-297 Sea View
League girls golf victory over Irvine Tuesday in a nine-hole match at
Big Canyon Country Club.
Amanda Campbell (48), Kayleigh Horn (51), Rachel Kone (51) and
Katie McKay (55) also scored for the Sailors, who improved to 6-3,
5-2 in league.
GOLF: Mesa whips Sage Hill
Costa Mesa High’s Jean You shot 41 on par-35 to help lead the
Mustangs’ girls golf team to a 268-300 Golden West League victory
over Sage Hill at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda Course
Tuesday.
Jessica Bunnell (52), Christian Casale (56), Rachel Hughes (59)
and Jacklyn Adams (60) also contributed to the win for Costa Mesa,
which improved to 7-6, 5-2 in league.
For Sage Hill, April Kim came in with the low score, 45, while
Chelsea Vayner finished with 60 and Megan McGillian had a 61.
GOLF: Albright paces CdM victory
Corona del Mar High’s Katie Albright was the medalist with a
4-over 40 on the north course (front nine) at Coto de Caza Tuesday,
leading CdM to a 239-260 Pacfic Coast League girls golf victory over
Tesoro High Tuesday.
Rounding out CdM’s scoring leaders were Jackie McCoy (46), Caitlin
MacDonald (48), Jennifer Woo (50) and Veronica Friedman (55).
Corona del Mar is now 8-4, 5-0 in the PCL.
GOLF: UCI men in second place
The UC Irvine men’s golf team is in second place by one shot after
the first 18 holes of The Tillinghast, hosted by St. John’s
University at Quaker Ridge Golf Course in Scarsdale, N.Y.,Tuesday.
San Diego leads at 290, UCI follows at 291, James Madison is at
292 and St. John’s 293 in the 14-team field. The final 18 holes will
be played today.
UCI’s Mike Lavery is tied for the individual lead with Andrew
Svoboda of St. John’s at 1-under par-68. The Anteaters’ Vinnie
Poncino is in fifth at 72, Ryan Armstrong is 21st at 75, and Jeff
Coburn and Jay Choe are tied for 24th after each shot 76 in the
opening round.
