Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team traded goals with host
Harvard-Westlake Tuesday at Moorpark College and both teams dueled to
a 2-2 Sunset League standoff.
“We did well to come out of here with a tie,” said Newport Coach
Sharon Wolfe, whose team began the day in second place in league
behind Edison.
Harbor tied the game at 1-1 with 15:51 left in the second half wen
Tiffany Vandersloot scored off an assist from Kirsten Chamberlain and
following a Harvard goal a few minutes later, Chloe Cox knotted the
score at 2 off an assist from Kaley Nix.
Sailor goalkeeper Amanda Wittman made five saves on the Astroturf
field.
“Amanda had a great game in goal,” Wolfe said. “Last year she had
a couple games on the turf that helped her play aggressively today.”
Tuesday’s game marked the return of Danielle Pfaff and Lauren
Curtis to the Sailors’ lineup, which keyed the team’s aggressiveness,
according to Wolfe.
“With our starters back in it allowed us to get Jillian Whitfield
up on the front line,” Wolfe said. “Jillian had four or five long
hits from the right side and. That and (Vandersloot) playing some
midfield ignited us.”
The Sailors (12-0-3, 6-0-3 in league) return to action at Harper
Community Center Thursday against Glendora at 3:15 p.m.
