Catherine Hooper
Catherine “Kay” Hooper died Aug. 27 of cardio pulmonary arrest.
She was 86. She lived in Laguna Beach for 45 years.
Ms. Hooper was a retired business woman for Frosty’s Floor
Coverings.
Services were private.
She is survived by daughters Joan Marriner and Jeanne Lorti; six
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great
grandchild.
H. Bradford (Brad) Atwood
Born Feb. 17, 1916 in Danielson, Conn., H. Bradford (Brad) Atwood
died Oct. 2. He was 86.
Mr. Atwood was a founding administrator at UC Irvine. After his
retirement in October 1978, as assistant chancellor emeritus, he was
elected president of the UC Irvine Retirees and Emeriti Assn. His two
former UCI department heads created a scholarship fund in his name at
the Graduate School for Management at UC Davis.
Mr. Atwood moved to Burbank in 1927, and graduated from Burbank
High School in 1933, where he earned nine letters in five sports. He
graduated from UCLA in 1938. After graduation from UCLA, he was
sports editor of the Burbank Daily Review and a stringer for the Los
Angeles Times while doing play-by-play announcing of college and high
school football games.
Mr. Atwood moved on to become the public relations director of the
Hollywood Stars Baseball Club in 1948 and 1949. He then took a job as
a public relations executive with Southern Pacific from 1950 to 1963.
During this period he was president of the Los Angeles Chapter Public
Relations Society of America and president of the Catholic Press
Council of Southern California. He served on public relations
advisory councils for the University of Southern California,
Occidental College and Queen of Angels Hospital. He was elected
president of the Downtown Los Angeles Kiwanis Club and a member of
the Jonathan Club.
Mr. Atwood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Georgia of Laguna
Beach; a daughter Gale in Corona del Mar; and sons Todd in San
Clemente and Mark in San Diego.
Services were graveside at Pacific View Memorial Park in Corona
del Mar.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Brad
Atwood Scholarship Fund, c/o UC Davis Foundation, UC Davis, 1 Shields
Ave., Davis, Calif., 95616.
Roger Elliott
Roger E. Elliott, Sr. died Oct. 3 of cancer. He was 73. Many new
him as the Toe Ring Man.
Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife, Shirley; six children, Roger
Jr., Tom, Shawn E., Shawn R., Richard and Loree; five grandchildren;
and a brother John.
An open memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 20 at Laguna
Village, 577 S. Coast Highway. Memorial donations may be made to St.
Joseph Health Hospice in Orange, the American Cancer Society or
Charlie Street in Costa Mesa.
Francis Toohey
Born on Dec. 12, 1916 in Storm Lake, Iowa, Francis R. Toohey
(Fritz) of Laguna Beach, died Oct. 1. He was 85.
Mr. Toohey was a WWII and Korean War veteran.
He is survived by children Catherine Posner, Richard, Jane
McNaught, son-in-law Jim Posner, Jim McNaught and daughter-in-law
Carolyn Toohey; grandchildren Michael, Meghann, Daniel, Shannon,
Caitlin, Erin and Dominic; and sister Gwen Canfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife Frances and son, the Rev.
Mark Toohey, S.J.
Funeral Mass was at Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano. Private
interment was at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Casa
de los Pobres de Tijuana, P.O. Box 432256 San Ysidro, Calif.,
92143-2256.
Ernest Lum
Ernest Lum died Oct. 7, of pancreatic cancer. He was 86.
He lived in Laguna Beach for 47 years. He was an aerospace
engineer.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie; four children, Wesley, Allan,
Lorna and Randy; and six grandchildren. Memorial services will be
from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct 13 from at Bluebird Park. In-lieu of
flowers donations may be made to the Laguna Beach Seniors, Inc. in
memory of Ernie Lum.
