‘Knockouts’ swing away

The Newport Knockouts answered a 2-0 deficit and pulled out a 3-2
win over the Costa Mesa Sudden Death in AYSO Region 97 Girls under-16
APP Plus action at Harper Community Center Sunday.
Debbie Yoder-Lee scored the game-winner off an indirect kick for
the Knockouts.
Costa Mesa opened the game with an aggressive attack which led to
its 2-0 lead. However, the Knockouts regrouped and started their
comeback with a well-placed goal by Kelsea Dunn. Then, Maloire
McMains evened the score with a highlight-type long shot for a goal.
* In Boys under-14 play:
Cheerios 4, The Who 1
Preston Davey scored two goals for the Cheerios, while The Who
prevented from being shut out. The Who scored a second-half goal as
Jonathan Gordon found the back of the net off of an assist by Will
Atwood.
Jamie Gayley, Tobin Olson, Travis Kuhns and Timothy Regan were
also responsible for The Who’s offense. Jacob Silverman, Juan
Trujillo, Michael Perkins and Vinnie Finn provided solid midfield
play for The Who, while the defense was led by Nick Normandin,
Christian Harrison and sweeper Brandon Parole.
Slammin’ Smurfs 4, Money Talks 4
Money Talks rallied from a 3-1 deficit and battled to a 4-4 tie
with the Slammin’ Smurfs. Money Talks scored their goals in the
second half. The Slammin’ Smurfs, who played without substitutes,
built a 3-0 lead in the first half. Ben Swift, Will Reichenstein and
David Garrett scored in the first half. Rex Nelson supported with
great offensive moves up front, while Robert DiFrancesco, Kyle
Caldwell and Andrew Kaban controlled the midfield.
Phil Garrett, filling in for the regular goalie, recorded several
solid saves for the Slammin’ Smurfs. Christopher Gutierrez, Branden
Rowley and Edgar Torres rounded out the defense. Swift scored a key
goal in the second half, otherwise Money Talks would have won.
* In Girls under-14 action:
Goldfishies 6, All American Girls 1
Karli Kuhns played at forward for the first time this season and
scored two goals to contribute to the Goldfishies’ victory. Nikki
Liddicote, Melissa Mead, Taren Siemonsma and Teyana Moyer scored one
goal each. Strong defense by goalie Brisa Garnier and fullback
Kendall Hefty sealed the win.
* In Girls under-12 APP Plus action:
Newport 2, Aliso Viejo 0
Brianna Uston and Shannon Rohan scored a goal each to lead the
Newport girls to victory. Shelby King assisted on Rohan’s goal.
Lauren deVoy, Adrienne Taylor, Carly Cotton, Stephanie Castor and
Katie Lawler created numerous scoring chances. Christina Cooley, Katy
Storch, Malia Hohl and Cayla Porter contributed to the shutout, as
did goalies Shelby Porter and Parisa Crane.
* In Boys under-12 play:
Rebels 4, Patriots 1
Eric Holland scored a hat trick and received pinpoint passes from
Corey Bell-Wheelans and Joshua Duerhing, as the trio helped lead the
Rebels to their first win of the season. Duerhing scored his first
goal of the season in the second quarter, after scoring attempts by
midfielders Cameron Conway and Cort Adler loosened the Patriots’
defense.
Midfielder Evan Call also helped keep the ball in Patriots’
territory. John Ryder contributed solid play as goalie and held the
Patriots to just one goal in the first half.
The Patriots mounted a strong attack in the second half, led by
Jackson Carmack and Jay Ordaz, but were met with stifling opposition
from sweeper Will Munoz and defenders Nathan Dickey, Jeff Fichtner
and Nick Vlahakis. Goalies Levi Rowe and Tim Barela combined to shut
out the Patriots in the second half.
Ordaz scored the Patriots’ goal with an assist from Will Curiel.
Spencer Baratto, Randall Hause and Chris O’Campo helped keep the
Rebel goalie busy with strong offense. Carmack, Peter Nguyen and
Joshua Bowman provided midfield support, while defenders Irving
Torres, Daron Arnold and Jay Wilson scrambled to fend off the Rebels.
The Patriots’ goalkeeper duties were shared by Tommy Freeman, Preston
Wheeler and Bowman.
Bruins 2, Hurricanes 1
The Bruins, who tied with the Rebels, 0-0, earlier in the day,
were led by scoring of Trevor Noon and Taylor Allee, who each scored
a goal, and were helped by the play of Ricky Sullivan who provided
pressure on offense. Sean Mueller, Max Van Bergh and Jake Caughill
led the Bruins’ midfield.
Daniel Netzer and Luc Heasley made several saves in goal, and
received strong defensive support from Christian Taggart, Brian
Krekemeyer and Andy Brown.
Grady Kough scored the Hurricanes’ goal off a pass from Morgan
Lintz in the first quarter.
Simon Hedrick, Christian Scott and Jordan McLaren provided strong
offensive support for the Hurricanes, while Derek Boler fired off
several on-goal shots. Yet, J.P. Muller, Harrison Faigen, Justin
McLaren and Max Collins kept the Hurricanes from finding the back of
the net.
* In Boys under-11 APP Plus action:
Newport 1, Aliso Viejo 1 Newport’s Whitney Regan scored the game-tying goal in the third
quarter. Newport Coach Pete Baca’s offense was led by offensive
captain Shawn Shahidi, and included solid efforts by Brian Baca, Cade
Feitler, Jesse Hickey and Jake Manning. Blake Davey led the Newport
defense, along with support from Zac Chocek, Malcolm Faigen, Mario
Figueroa and Spencer Martinez.
* In Boys under-10 action:
Blue Blasters 5, Cheetahs 4
The Blue Blasters collected the victory despite competing with
nine players and no substitutes. The Blasters’ Craig McKennon, Caleb
Candelaria, Trey Franklin and Misha Pakvasa scored goals, and they
were backed by a solid defense that featured Ryan Shannon, C.J. Tona,
Paul Tadross and Paul Weisinger. Jake Likich, Shannon and Weisinger
shared the goalkeeper duties for the Blue Blasters.
Killer Bees 3, Blue Knights 0
The Killers Bees featured only seven players yet still earned the
shutout victory. Stefano Nark scored two goals, while Timmy Root was
the first to find the back of the net.
Surf Monkeys 1, Fighting Ninjas 0
Wyeth Rietveld scored on a breakaway after gathering a long pass
from Sean Regan in the first half. Scott Mack and Trevor Managa
maintained the Surf Monkeys’ offensive attack on the Ninjas’ defense.
Surf Monkey goalkeepers Garrett Kerr and Casey Bushong helped provide
the shutout. Midfielders Patrick Briand, Patrick Conway, Tyler Smyth
and Dylan Goodman contributed to the Surf Monkeys’ offense by winning
several balls.
Michael Shaw led the Surf Monkeys’ defense, while defender Willie
Pyle also provided an elite effort.
For the Ninjas, Nathan Bryant and James Jarvis added strong
midfield support, while Zach Buie chipped in with solid defense. Cody
Caldwell, Stevie Michaelson, Jake Turner, Taylor Wildman, Matthew
Buchanan and Dustin Ayers fired off several shots and created
numerous scoring opportunities.
* In Girls under-12 action:
Red Crush 7, Sponge Girls Blue Pants 0
The Red Crush remained undefeated in convincing fashion. Goals
were scored by Kaitlin Kehoe, Kayla Henrie, Karla Navarette,
Valentina Buonanoce and Charlotte Farrell. Devyn Hartnett, Haley
Willard, Zoie Verrali and Jordan Granath contributed strong defense
and solid midfield play. Hartnett, Farrell, Buonanoce and Henrie
shared goalie duties and earned the shutout.
* In Girls under-10 action:
Blue Angels 4, Galaxy Girls 1
Alex Murphy and Jordan Pickard scored the first two goals of the
game to get the Blue Angels out to an early lead. It was also their
first goals of the year. Later in the game, Beth Barnard scored on a
pass from Kathryn Zimmermann to push the lead to 3-0. Zimmermann
collected her second assist to Blakeley Ficenec to round out the
scoring. The Blue Angels improved to 5-0.
Breakers 3, Peppermint Twist 0
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams play tough
defense, the Breakers came alive in the second. Tatum Norton scored
off an assist from Christina Young. A strong pass by left halfback
Kellie Conant led to a goal by Amber Eary. Robin Young assisted with
the third goal by feeding a pass to Madison Walsh, who pounded the
ball into the net.
Blue Blasters 1, Green Hornets 0
Natalie Swift, who released from her position as stopper, brought
the ball up toward the Green Hornets’ goal and put it in the corner
from about 18 yards out midway in the final quarter.
Veronica Seidner and Cindy Mejia contributed solid efforts as
forwards. Defenders Swift, Kate Batstone and Charlotte Skjonsby
helped provide the shutout, as did goalie Jamie Fredrickson. Amanda
Peterson, Joanna Cornejo, Stephanie Verheyen and Holly Kelly
displayed great ball-handling skills in the midfield.
Blue Crush 1, Stingers 1
The Blue Crush held the undefeated Stingers to the tie. Both teams
scored in the first quarter. Sara Vetrovec scored first for the Blue
Crush.
Lindsay Anderson prevented the loss and scored for the Stingers,
while Nicole Perrier, Monique Conant and Nicole DiNatale also
provided offensive support. Gracie Bebeau, Jamie Searles and Dana
Pitts contributed solid defense, and Andrea Cruz and Sydney Clayton
also added strong efforts to maintain the tie.
The Bratz 3, Tsunami 1
The Bratz opened a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals from Milena
Buonanoce and Courtney McIntosh. Maria Swift scored in the third
quarter to lead the Bratz to the victory. Sophia Leveque, Kelly
Kindgren, Breanna Landstrom and Alexandra Kehoe combined to provide a
strong effort in goal. Additional standout efforts came from Claire
Castillo, Katie Escher, Zoe Sanglerat and Madelaine Gallardo.
* In Boys under-8 action:
The Green Fireballs
Chase Whiting, Efe Atli and Antonio Pineda scored goals for the
Green Fireballs. Jake Prater displayed control with his ball-handling
skills, while Tyler Palmquist was solid overall. Stephen Golden,
Nathan Fulmizi and Aldrin Mendez contributed strong efforts that led
to the goal scoring. Charlie Gels and Gray Berman were solid in goal.
Spitfires vs. Speedy Hurricanes
Kurt Walde, James Newman and Ishmael Alkayali scored goals and
Nick Vieira found the back of the net twice. Landon Gyulay, who
frequently contributes to the offense, provided an impressive effort
as the Spitfires’ goalie in the second half. Kevin Rakestraw was the
goalie in the first half. Theo Boistel teamed with Ellery Sever and
Parker Martinez to keep the offensive pressure on, while Eric Mejia
relentlessly protected the Spitfires’ turf in the backfield.
* In Girls under-8 action:
Bluewater Dolphins vs. Zooming Zebras
Page Keys and Carly Christiansen led the offense for the Bluewater
Dolphins. Defensively, the Dolphins were paced by Nicollette Powell
and Maddie Collins. For the Zebras, Sara Hamilton, Hannah Mumm, Sally
Fuller, Sarah Daly and Nicole Fitzsimons drove the ball forward with
great passing. Delaney McCardle, Cinnimon Sary, Kiani Crivello and
Catherine Connelly displayed speed that led to a goal. Taylor Power
and Cathryn Boettner provided solid defense.
