EXIT EXAM SCORES DISCUSSION
In the spring, 433 students took the English-language arts portion
and 42% passed while 728 students took the mathematics portion and
35% passed. After the March test, the overall statistics show that
86% of Newport-Mesa Unified students in the class of 2004 have passed
the English-language arts exam and 71% have passed the mathematics
portion of the test.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The board will discuss intervention strategies to help the
remainder of students pass, including integrating an exit exam
preparation class into the curriculum.
UCI NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANT
UCI has been awarded a five-year, $14.2-million National Science
Foundation grant for a new mathematics and science education
partnership program. The FOCUS program’s goals include engaging
high-need students in quality math and science curricula; raising the
number, diversity and quality of preparation of math and science
teachers; creating a collaborative model for ongoing professional
development of pre-kindergarten through 12th grade faculty; and
contributing to the national dialogue on how to make systematic
change in these grade levels.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The board will hear specific goals of the grant project and meet
UCI staff members who will work with the district over the next five
years.
