Water polo puts on strong showing
The Laguna Beach High boys’ water polo team continues to impress
in its first year playing at the Division I level.
The Breakers earned an 11th place finish overall in the recent,
three-day South Coast Tournament that was held at Newport Harbor and
Corona del Mar high schools.
Laguna Beach, currently ranked seventh among Division I teams, ran
its record to 7-2 following tournament play. The Breakers had big
wins over ranked teams Villa Park and San Clemente. One of their two
losses was to eventual tournament champion Long Beach Wilson, a match
in which the Breakers played the physical Bruins tough before
eventually falling, 9-6.
The Breakers currently are playing in the Villa Park Tournament.
In a girls’ tennis match played last Monday, Laguna Beach picked
up a 13-5 nonleague win over Capistrano Valley.
The Breakers’ No. 2 doubles team of Kim Ochwat and Corey Miller
swept the Cougars’ three doubles teams by scores of 6-0, 6-1, 6-1.
Laguna’s top doubles team of Jessica Murray and the No. 3 team of
Britton Simons and Alex Murrel each won two of three matches.
In singles play, No. 1 Camerin Barron-Sandman, No. 2 Claire
Rietsch and No. 3 Jackie Reed each won two of three for the Breakers.
