CdM rolls past Laguna Beach
Corona del Mar High’s girls tennis team continued its dominating
ways Thursday with a 14-4 victory at Laguna Beach in the Pacific
Coast League opener for both teams.
Taylynn Snyder and Brittany Holland swept in singles, and Juliette
Mutzke and Amanda Rubenstein and Jackie Manning and Courtney Carnahan
swept in doubles as CdM improved to 6-1, 1-0 in the PCL.

TENNIS: Mesa girls win tiebreaker
Just two days after suffering a Golden West League loss in a
tiebreaker to Westminster, the Costa Mesa High girls tennis team
responded with an 83-75 win in games, after a 9-9 tie with visiting
Santa Ana Thursday.
The Mustangs trailed 9-8, with one doubles set remaining. The Mesa
duo of Linda Tran and Thao Vu won that final set in a tiebreaker, 7-6
(10-8), setting up the team tie.
“Our No. 1 singles (Hillary Havens) and No. 1 doubles team
(Minh-Thy Pham and Chi Doan) swept and won by such a large margin,
that gave us an insurmountable advantage in games,” Mesa Coach Joe
Havens said. “We just came off a tough 9-9 loss to Westminster. They
knew they had to do a little extra and they came through.”
The Mustangs improved to 5-5, 5-1 in league, while Santa Ana
dropped to 9-2, 5-2.

TENNIS: McIntosh paces Newport
Newport Harbor High’s No. 2 singles player Thursday, Krista
McIntosh, didn’t lose a game as Newport rebounded from Wednesday’s
loss to Laguna Beach to defeat visiting Aliso Niguel in the Sailors’
first Sea View League match Thursday at Newport Harbor High.
Junior Vanessa Dunlap won all three of her sets at No. 3 singles
and the doubles duo of Diana Khoury and A.J. Olson continued their
impressive run with three wins to improve their doubles record to
17-1 this season.
Gaby Kay won two of her three singles set as Newport’s No. 1
singles player Thursday and Bonnie Adams and Carly Adams won all
three of their sets as Newport improved to 3-3, 1-0 in the Sea View
League.
The Sailors will face host Irvine Tuesday before traveling to
Laguna Hills Thursday in two Sea View League meets next week.

Sage Hill High’s venture to Cypress was a winning one Thursday as
the Lightning captured a 13-5 victory over Oxford Academy in Academy
League play.
Kellie Ammerman, Katie McKitterick and Paige Fullmer all swept in
singles to pace the victory. Sage Hill is now 6-2, 4-1 in league.
Oxford fell to 6-3, 2-3.

Kyle Thorsness scored three goals and three other Costa Mesa High
boys water polo players each scored two goals in the Mustangs’
nonleague 10-9 loss to visiting Tesoro Wednesday.
Christian Darnas, Brian Tipton and Adam Douglas each scored two
goals for the Mustangs, who led Tesoro 6-4 at halftime, but managed
to score three second-half goals to Tesoro’s six goals in the third
and final quarter.
Costa Mesa goalkeeper Matt Jaroslawski made nine saves.

JC POLO: OCC women win again
Sophomore Erica Nicholson scored two goals, recorded two assists
and then posted six saves as goalkeeper in the second half to help
lead the fifth-ranked Orange Coast College women’s water polo team to
a 12-2 victory over the University of Utah club team Thursday, at
Coast.
Sheri Meyer scored the first of her game-high three goals with
2:20 left in the first quarter, giving the Pirates a 2-0 lead. OCC
(13-4, 4-0 in the Orange Empire Conference) built an 8-0 halftime
lead and did not allow a goal until the final quarter.
The Pirates return to action today and will compete in the two-day
Ventura College Tournament.

VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill sweeps
The Sage Hill High girls volleyball team received strong efforts
from Vista Murphy, Sophia Hillgren, Shelley Smith and Cat Dailey and
collected a 15-6, 17-15, 15-10 nonleague win over Saddleback
Christian at the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club Thursday.
Murphy contributed a team-high six kills, while Hillgren chipped
in with four kills and seven aces. Smith and Dailey added five kills
each.
Sage Hill (3-1) opens Academy League play Oct. 11 at St.
Margaret’s.
POLO: Mesa wins, 12-10
The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team staved off a furious
fourth-quarter rally that saw visiting La Quinta High score six goals
as Costa Mesa won 12-10 in nonleague action Thursday at Costa Mesa
High.
Adam Douglas scored three goals as Anthony Adamowicz, Christian
Darnas and Kyle Thorsness each scored two goals with Christian Medina
adding a single goal to lead Mesa’s attack.
Mustangs’ goalie Matt Jaroslawski made eight saves.
Kevin Harrison, Anthony Chau, Steven Billings, Matt Paulson, Jeff
Waldman, Jack Nanz, Anthony Adamowicz, Christian Darnas, Kyle
Thorsness, Adam Douglas, Christian Medina, Matt Jaroslawski all
shared in the victory for the Mustangs.
Costa Mesa plays at Orange in a Golden West League game Tuesday at
Orange High.

GOLF: Mesa bests Sage Hill
Costa Mesa High notched their first Golden West League win
Thursday as they beat host Sage Hill, 289-316 at the par-36 Rancho
San Joaquin Golf Course.
Jean You led the Mustangs, 3-5, 1-1 in league, with a 51 followed
by 56’s from both Jacklyn Adams and Jessica Bunnell. Rachel Hughes
shot 61 and Christian Casale fired a 65 for Mesa.
“Any win is a good win,” said Mesa coach Todd Kolber. “The girls
played pretty well and I was pleased with the overall consistency.”
The Mustangs next match is Tuesday against visiting Oxford Academy
at 3 p.m. at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda Course.
GOLF: Newport tops Irvine
Newport Harbor High’s girls golf team was a 230-277 winner over
Irvine at Oak Creek Golf Club Thursday, improving to 2-0 in the Sea
View League.
Newport Harbor’s Natalie Draganza shot a 4-over 40 for the nine
holes for medalist honors.
Other Sailors contributing were Kayleigh Horn (43), Amanda
Campbell (47), Rachel Kone (48) and Ashley Jacobs (52).
