Mesa mauls Laguna Niguel
Four first-half goals spearheaded the Costa Mesa Boys under-15 APP
Plus soccer team from AYSO Region 120 as they went on to a 5-2
victory over Laguna Niguel Sunday.
Luis Guerrero scored two goals as Nick Straubel and Luis Andrade
each added single goals for Mesa in the first half. Jay Benny Quiroz
added a goal in the second half as strong defense and offense was
provided by Shawn Engmann, Francisco Estrada, Joshua Henriquez, Nick
Juarez, Jordan Kalke, Juan Perez and Ryan Pfautz. Goalkeeper Matt
Pisarski made seven saves.
On Saturday, Costa Mesa tied Tustin, 2-2, as Pisarski made 14
saves for Mesa.
Quiroz and Straubel scored the goals for Mesa as Luis Andrade,
Nicolas Arant, Ernesto Casteneda, Shawn Engmann, Estrada, Guerrero,
Josh Hendrikson, Brian Henriquez, Juarez, Kalke, Perez and Fautz
played strong offense and defense.
In Girls under-14 action:
* Twisted Chaos 1, All American Girls 0
One goal and a last-minute save are all the Twisted Chaos, a Girls
under-14 AYSO Region 120 soccer team, needed to get past the All
American Girls, 1-0.
Chaos forwards had several opportunities to score before they
broke through late in the second quarter as midfielder Victoria
Farrow passed down the line to Annel Alvarez, who dribbled past two
defenders to score the only goal.
In the fourth quarter, Chaos’ goalie Jaye Hellmich was drawn out
of the box and fullback Samantha Strodel made a reverse kick to
preserve the win. The All American Girls had a chance to tie the game
in the third quarter as well, but the shot went wide.
* The Strikers continued their undefeated season with a win
Saturday against Costa Mesa at the Farm Complex.
Multiple goals from Karyn May and Chantel O’Toole combined with
assists from Emily Leece and Aubrey Brown helped the Strikers to the
win.
In Girls under-12 play:
* Girls In Black 4, Cherry Bombs 1
Forward Alex Payzant scored three goals and Alexa Aguilar added
another score as the Girls in Black defeated the Cherry Bombs.
Forward Abby Scheaffer had two assists as fullbacks Mariah Bailey,
Teresa Fox and Michelle Eastman played steady throughout the game.
Rebecca Alward, Nicole Apted and Diana Gutierrez supported the
midfield.
* Poison Ivy 2, Raiders 1
Two goals from Breanna Arellano helped lead Poison Ivy to the win.
Arellano scored the first of her two goals from a cross delivered
by halfback Annie Tomasek and scored her second goal off a corner
kick in the final quarter as Tiffany Choi, Gabby Chavez and Lindsay
Atwood held strong, allowing only one goal to be scored on goalkeeper
Kelsi Bauermeister.
Scoring chances by forwards Jenna Turner and Rachel Golden were
stopped by the Raiders’ defense as Madison McCarthy, Karen Villalba
and Megan Kipp covered the midfield.
In Boys under-12 play:
* Newport 2, Costa Mesa Firebirds 1
Costa Mesa answered Newport’s first goal when Adam Gardner made a
cross pass to Jordan Strobel, who scored Costa Mesa’s lone goal as
Newport edged out a win.
Newport’s goalkeeper kept the game tied in the third quarter as
Costa Mesa’s Marc DeFrenza, Nicholas Desidario, Edward Garcia, Arnold
Hernandez and Omar Gamboa had seven shots on goal between them.
Rubin Rubio, Alexander Suarez and Eric Cushing kept the Mesa zone
relatively quiet for Mesa goalkeeper Michael Liedtke, who touched the
ball only three times.
Newport crossed the ball to the weak side on a corner kick and
took the lead for good.
* Firebirds 3, Blue Crew 2
The Firebirds scored the first three goals and held on to beat the
Blue Crew.
The Fireballs used effective ball movement by strikers Robert
Rutan and Alex Suarez and Marc DeFrenza, Eric Cushing and Jordan
Strobel, who laced the ball through the midfield and attacked the
Blue Crew defense from the sides.
Rutan scored his first goal of the season on a cross from Nicholas
Desidario as Edward Garcia and Arnold Hernandez slowed the attacking
Blue Crew offense, redirecting them to the outside where Adam Gardner
and Ruben Rubio stopped several shots entering their zone.
Goalkeeper Michael Liedtke played strong in net, allowing only two
goals as the Fireballs evened the season series between the two
teams, 1-1.
The teams will play each other a third time Nov. 2 at 1:30 p.m. at
TeWinkle School in Costa Mesa.
