A six spot for the Smurfs
Two goals apiece from Will Reichenstein and Phil Garrett helped
propel the Slammin’ Smurfs of AYSO Region 97 boys under-14 soccer to
beat the Avengers, 6-2.
Ben Swift and Rex Nelson scored one goal apiece for the Smurfs as
Andrew Kaban assisted on one of Garrett’s goals. Reichenstein
assisted Swift’s goal.
Smurfs goalkeeper Tommy Olson blocked an Avenger shot in the
fourth quarter as Edgar Torres, David Garrett and Chris Gutierrez
held the Avengers at bay defensively.
Kyle Fults, Brandon Rowley and Robert DiFrancesco played steady at
the midfield and offensively. Jordan Hovis is sidelined with a broken
arm.
In boys under-12 play:
* Bruins 3, Rebels 2
The Bruins rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit as Taylor Allec of
the Bruins scored two gaols off passes from Bryan Rhodes and Blake
Kelly, who also scored one goal for the Bruins in their win.
Strong defense and midfield play by Andy Brown, Jake Caughill, Luc
Heasley, Sean McLaughlin, Sean Mueller, Trevor Noon, Christian
Taggert and Max Van Bergh helped ignite the Bruins attack as Brian
Krekemeyer frustrated Rebel scorers. Goalkeeper Daniel Netzer stopped
several shots on goal.
* Patriots 3, Hurricanes 2
Jay Ordaz scored two goals with an assist from Daron Arnold as
Josh Bowman added a third first-half goal for the Patriots as they
held on to defeat the Hurricanes.
Offensive support for the Patriots was provided by Wil Curiel,
Randall Hause and Christopher Cowie as Jackson Carmack and Chris
O’Campo made effective passes and assisted at the midfield.
Defenders Spencer Baratto, Jay Wilson and Tommy Freeman helped
protect the goal as the Hurricanes threatened. Preston Wheeler and
Bowman shared goalkeeping duties.
The Hurricanes held the Patriots scoreless in the second half as
Harrison Faigen, Justin McLaren and J.F. Muller played strong defense
for the Hurricanes.
Derek Boler scored on a penalty shot in the fourth quarter to
bring the Hurricanes to within one goal, but the Patriots held on to
win. Easton Giedt scored the Hurricanes first goal in the first half.
Jordan McLaren and Morgan Lintz contributed on the offensive end
for the Hurricanes.
* Blue Knights 3, Surf Monkeys 1
The Blue Knights rallied with only nine players to defeat the Surf
Monkeys.
Tobin Frome, Andrew Duhoux, Collin Pochirowski and Fisher Robinson
scored goals for the Blue Knights, who scored twice in the fourth
quarter.
* Fighting Ninjas 2, Stars and Stripes 0
Matthew Buchanan started the scoring with a penalty kick as Jake
Turner scored the second Ninja goal as the Ninjas recorded the
shutout.
Grant Frazier played strong in goal as Spencer Lindsay supported
as a sweeper and Dustin Ayers played steady defense.
Stevie Michaelson had several shots on goal and corner kicks.
* Killer Bees 7, Cheetahs 0
Three goals by Timmy Root and single goals from Chris Whitledge,
Stefano Nark, Jordan Desguin and Vince Aqueveque helped the Bees
blank the Cheetahs.
Aqueveque, Whitledge, Desguin and Root shared goalkeeper duties
for the Bees.
* Blue Blasters 2, Volcanoes 2
Goals by Brecht Van’t Hof and Paul Weisinger helped the Blue
Blasters tie the Volcanoes as Craig McKennon, Caleb Candelaria and
Trey Franklin contributed offensively.
Jake Lickich and Misha Pakvasa shared goaltending duties along
with Van’t Hof.
Pakvasa, Paul Tadross, Ryan Shannon, C.J. Tona and Corey Fultz
made up the midfield and defense for the Blasters.
In boys under-8 action:
* Jake Prater scored his and the Green Fireballs’ first goal of
the season on a pass from Efe Atl in the second quarter Saturday.
Charlie Gels had a shut-out quarter in goal as Nathan Fulmizi,
Stephen Golden, Aldrin Mendez and Riley Hunt made some key touches.
Antonio Pineda, Chase Whiting and Tyler Palmquist also played steady
at their positions.
* The Golden Snitches and Orange Crush battled each other last
weekend.
Kyle Flagg showed strong ball-handling and passing skills as
Nicholas Justice was aggressive at forward with Nick Shahidi and
Steve Keenan made accurate passes to move the ball up the field.
Steady defense was provided by Pierce Ward, who played goalkeeper
in the second half and made some key saves, and Izaak Lofgren broke
up scoring plays and launched powerful kicks.
The Orange Crush sent two players to the Golden Snitches for the
game because the Snitches were down one man for most of the game.
Dayton Cribbs in the first half and Max Zielinski in the second half
each played well at midfield for their adopted team.
* Despite being down three players, the Newport Beach Hornets
played hard against the Devil Rays.
Dalton James, Connor Leggett and Griffin Leggett played strong up
front with support coming from Luke Rockwell and Max Johnson.
Joshua Gutierrez and Joshua Bullock contributed solid defense as
Devil Ray players also put forth a strong effort.
Adam Josephson, William Fuchs and Joshua Eakin didn’t play for the
Hornets.
In boys under-7 action:
* The Blue Blasters hosted the Fireballs Saturday.
Fireball attackers Nick Huntley, Mario Nark and Brandt Bucher and
midfielders Kody Wensley and Nick Roman passed and moved the ball
well down the field, leading to several goals.
Defensive teams of Marcell DeBarros, Mitch Mendoza, Cameron Hall
and Daniel O’Toole made several saves as Fireball goalkeepers Marc
Gehlke and Brooks O’Hea stopped many Blaster shots.
In boys under-6 play:
* The Shooters and Crabs played as Landon Knight scored three
goals with Ryan Braun, Michael Ischinger and John Conley each playing
well.
* The Thunderbolts rallied in the final two quarters against the
Snakes to make for a competitive contest.
Reiley Gaddis’ defense kept the Thunderbolts in the game in the
first half and Brett Tafoya created many offensive drives.
The Snakes received a strong effort from their entire team as
Garrett Davis had an eye for the ball.
* The Firestorm battled hard against the Green Hornets at Newport
Harbor High Saturday.
Griffin Sharp and Brett Beaudette each scored for the Firestorm.
