Sailors bounce Oilers
Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team was a winner in four
games Tuesday as the Sailors tuned up for this weekend’s action in
Chicago at the Nike Challenge, hosted by Mother McCauley High.
The Sailors, guilty of too many unforced errors, according to
their coach, Dan Glenn, were led the killing efforts of Kristin
McClune (14), Alyson Jennings (12), Lauren Miller (10), Elizabeth
Clayton (7) and Emily Turner (5). Kellie King was credited with 62
assists.
The 15-12, 6-15, 15-4, 15-9 victory improved Harbor’s recod to 7-1
as the Tars prepare for the 24-team invitational, which includes
schools from 10 different states.
Among the field is defending champion Assumption High of Kentucky,
which knocked off Newport Harbor last year en route to the tournament
crown.
Also of national note is Downers Grove South of Illinois, ranked
No. 2 in a national poll recently.
“If we miss as many serves as we did tonight our chances are not
very good,” said Glenn.
The Sailors tangle with St. Ignatius of Illinois at 6:45 p.m.
Friday, then must deal with Wisconsin’s top-rated Pius XI just 75
minutes later to complete pool play.
Eight pool winners vie for the crown on Saturday.
