Spill closes section of harbor
A sewage spill Tuesday afternoon closed a section of Newport
Harbor.
The Orange County Health Care Agency ordered the closure of the
Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club’s marina after 200 gallons of raw sewage
spilled into the harbor there, Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol
Sgt. Jim Thomas said.
The spill occurred when a line in the Newport Beach sewage
collection system became clogged. It was blocked by roots and paper
products, Thomas said.
The agency ordered the closure at 12:30 p.m. and announced it at 4
p.m. Tuesday.
After the agency orders a closure, the area is closed to swimming
or diving for at least 72 hours.
