UCI puts away New Mexico, 1-0

UC Irvine’s men’s soccer team was a 1-0 winner over visiting New
Mexico Tuesday night at Anteater Stadium as Dardo Acuna came through
with a goal in the 46th minute off an assist from Anthony Vizcarra.
The Anteaters, now 5-4-2, handed New Mexico only its second loss
in 10 starts.
JC MEN’S SOCCER: Bucs win, 3-1
Miguel Ochoa, Joel Sotolongo and Bobby Dulle each scored for the
visiting Pirates, as they defeated Cypress, 3-1, in an Orange Empire
Conference soccer game Tuesday.
Orange Coast College goalie Josh Costenmoyer made four saves in
the win, which improves the Bucs’ record to 8-2-1, 1-0-1 in
conference.
WATER POLO: Eagles fall, 15-7
Six goals in the first period and four goals in the second period
sparked a quick Saddleback team to a 15-7 win over Estancia High in a
Golden West League game Tuesday.
“They were a really fast team and we couldn’t keep up with them,”
said Estancia coach John Carpenter.
Estancia outscored Saddleback, 6-5, in the second half as Frank
Gamboa and Anthony Hermann led the Eagles with two goals each
followed by single goals from Matt Metkovich, Paul Collier and Anath
Varma. Eagle goalie Nathan Marsteller made six saves.
The Eagles (2-6, 1-1 in the Golden West League) host Santa Ana
Tuesday.

GOLF: Sailors defeat Aliso Niguel
Newport Harbor High freshman Natalie Draganza shot 2-over-par 37
to lead the Sailors girls golf team to a 253-269 Sea View
League-opening victory Tuesday over host Aliso Niguel at the Aliso
Viejo Golf Club.
Kayleigh Horn (49), Amanda Campbell (51), Rachel Kone (57), Ashley
Jacobs (59) and Marissa Zehnder (59) rounded out the lineup for the
Sailors.
GOLF: Mustangs bested by OV
Visiting Ocean View High defeated the Costa Mesa girls golf team,
261-282, Tuesday in the Golden West League opener for both schools at
the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda course.
Senior Jean You led Mesa with a 10-over-par 45, while Jessica
Bunnell shot 50 and Christian Casale shot 61.
Costa Mesa (2-3) plays Sage Hill in a league match Thursday at
Rancho San Joaquin Golf Club.
Sage Hill and Oxford Academy, both typically members of the
Academy League, are competing this season in the Golden West League
along with Mesa, Estancia, Orange and Ocean View.
WOMEN’S SOCCER: Lions roll, 2-0
Vanguard University’s women’s soccer team garnered its second
straight 2-0 victory Tuesday, besting previously undefeated Concordia
on the winner’s field.
Concordia saw its unblemished 7-0 record marred in the Golden
State Athletic Conference opener as the Lions, now 4-3-2, 1-0, took
an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Nicole Avila.
Avila placed a shot over the head of the Concordia goalie 10
minutes into the match for her third goal of the season.
An insurance marker came in the second half as freshman Ashley
DeLoachb scored after the ball deflected off a Concordia defender.
Jordan Fredriksen had eight second-half saves (nine in all) to
preserve the shutout victory.
CROSS COUNTRY: Lightning loses
Junior Chris Chiboucas ran to a fourth-place finish to lead the
Sage Hill High boys cross country team in their first Academy League
meet against host Whitney Tuesday in Cerriots, but Whitney proved too
tough and beat the Lightning boys 20-35.
Freshman Zach Chandy took fifth overall with a 19:08, as fellow freshman Tim Lefler finished in 19:51 on the three-mile course at the
Cypress Sports Complex.
Sage Hill girls’ top finisher was freshman Kelsey Rose, who ran to
a 10th-place finish (25:03). The Lightning had only four girls
competing, one less than the five runners required to post a score.
Sage Hill boys (1-2, 0-1 in league) and the girls (0-3, 0-1) host
St. Margaret’s Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Mason Park in Irvine.
MEN’S SOCCER: Lions lose, 2-0
Vanguard University goalie Christopher Swift recorded 10 saves,
but visiting Concordia kept firing numerous shots and won, 2-0,
Tuesday in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both
teams.
The Concordia Eagles (8-1) outshot the Lions, 25-7. Ismael
Cervantes scored in the 52nd minute. Later, Kyle Carroll drilled a
shot for a goal with 7:32 remaining. Vanguard is 4-7.
