Sailors upset El Toro, 11-6
The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team knocked off the El
Toro Chargers, 11-6, in a quarterfinal game of the South Coast
Tournament at Newport Harbor High Friday.
Led by three goals apiece from Ross Sinclair and Nathan Weiner,
Newport, ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division I, beat El
Toro, No. 5 in Division I, and faces Servite in the semifinals today
at 10:40 a.m. Victory sends the Sailors into the 4:05 p.m. final, at
Harbor.
Michael Bury added two goals with Charlie Hockenberry, Bryan Auer
and Jay Thompson each added one goal apiece for the Sailors. Sinclair
had three assists. Goalie Michael Robinson made eight saves for
Newport.
“We played good defense to only give up six goals against them,”
said Newport Coach Jason Lynch.

Sea Kings lose, 9-6
NEWPORT BEACH -- Five fourth-period goals propelled The Bishops
boys water polo team to a 9-6 win over Corona del Mar in CdM’s third
game of the South Coast Tournament at Newport Harbor High Friday.
Senior Jason DiRocco led the Sea Kings with three goals as seniors
Artie Dorr (two goals) and John Mann (one goal) scored for CdM.
The game was tied 3-3 at halftime but The Bishops scored six
second-half goals to CdM’s three while outshooting the Sea Kings
24-18 for the game. CdM goalie Beau Stockstill made 10 saves.
DiRocco had two assists and Mann also added one assist with Kevin
Amendt, Ryan Moore, DiRocco and John Money each making one steal.
The Sea Kings play two games today, the first at 9:35 a.m. and the
second will be determined if CdM wins or loses its first game today.
