Favored teams advance in tourney

Five of the six higher seeded teams competing in the city of
Laguna Beach Men’s Summer 16 Slow Pitch Softball leagues playoffs
have advanced to the winner’s bracket following the opening round of
double-elimination action at Riddle Field.
Defending Wednesday League champion Mesa Verde Partners easily
advanced to the second round by shutting down the No. 4 seeded Sofa
Kings, 15-0.
Ranie Martini hurled a one-hitter for Mesa Verde. The only hit he
yielded was a third inning single to Jason Kenworthy.
Jerry Writer powered a solid Mesa Verde hitting attack with a pair
of home runs and four RBI.
Jerry Pich contributed three singles and two RBI to the cause and
Jeff Greenough hit a home run, single and sacrifice fly with four
RBI.
Mesa Verde’s victory set up a second round showdown with last
summer’s Monday League champion, Sports World.
Sports World 15, Courtesy Auto Body 3
Second-seeded Sports World advanced in postseason play by
defeating No. 3 seeded Courtesy Auto Body.
Randy Buck pitched a four hitter to get the win, giving up three
singles in addition to a solo home run by Mike MacKenzie.
John P. McMurray accounted for six Sports World runs behind two
home runs and a double.
Teo Moore and Scott Bakkum each went three for three with a home
run and two singles, with Moore collecting four RBI and Bakkum one.
Courtesy Auto Body 7, Sofa Kings 3
Courtesy Auto Body stayed alive in postseason play and ended Sofa
Kings’ season at the same time with a 7-3 win.
MacKenzie connected on two home runs, doubled and singled in four
at-bats to lead Courtesy Auto Body.
Mike Jewell added a home run and single.
Kenworthy paced Sofa Kings with a home run and single.
In Tuesday League action:
Ganahl Lumber, Island Shade and Used Cars each picked up first
round victories.
Ganahl Lumber 6, Team Viagra 5
Second-seeded Ganahl Lumber had just enough to come from behind to
hold off a Team Viagra team that won just one game during the regular
season.
Team Viagra, the No. 7 seed, built a five run lead on favored
Ganahl Lumber through four innings of play. But the No. 2 seed began
to rally over the final four innings.
Ganahl Lumber scored three runs in the fifth inning, highlighted
by John Verdugo’s home run. They tacked on another run in the sixth
on Robert Bonn’s solo home run and drew even at 5-5 with a run in the
seventh frame.
In the eighth inning, Robert Ponce delivered a leadoff single and
scored on Greg Wallace’s game-winning double.
Team Viagra scored two of its five runs in the first inning on
Nate Pivaroff’s two-run home run. They scored three more runs in the
third, courtesy of three singles and a Keith Mulvaney double.
Used Cars 7, Rotary 6
A six-run sixth inning brought sixth-seeded Used Cars back from a
6-2 deficit and to upset of No. 3 seed Rotary.
An RBI single by Bede Arabe and a huge grand slam by Mike Cooper
accounted for the five run inning.
Rotary scored four, first inning runs behind Doug Johnson’s
three-run home run and an RBI walk. They scored two more runs in the
third inning on Johnson’s second homer of the game, this one a
two-run shot.
Island Shade 12, Good, Bad, Ugly 1
Fourth-seeded Island Shade belted out 27 hits to rout No. 5 Good,
Bad and Ugly.
Tom Taylor and Coby Naess each had a home run and two singles,
Mike Burns doubled and singled, and Bruce Aguinaldo got the pitching
win on the strength of a five-hit effort.
