DP 103 list missed a few people
The Daily Pilot’s list of the 103 Most Influential People of the
Newport-Mesa Community (DP 103, Wednesday) should have included the
dean of the only fully accredited graduate school in Newport-Mesa:
Dean Neil Cogan, of Whittier Law School. I hope you will consider his
inclusion next year.

I was disappointed under your Legacies section to not see David
“Bucko” Shaw. If you can include Matt Colby and Andre Stewart (no
disrespect against them), Bucko should have been included. He still
holds the CIF record from 1974 for longest kickoff return and was
inducted into your millennium list the first year. He was also very
well known around town to people from all walks of life, and is well
remembered by the entire Newport Harbor High alumni. He meant a great
deal to a lot of people and, after 1 1/2 years, he is still deeply
missed.

I am amazed that you failed to mention the president and vice
president of the Airport Working Group, Tom Naughton and Rick Taylor.
Airport noise is the most pressing problem facing our communities and
these two unpaid volunteers, Tom and Rick, have worked long hard
hours to keep us all from experiencing more inconvenience from the
planes that fly out of John Wayne Airport. The council members and
supervisor that you included are being paid to do this job. Tom and
Rick are doing it because it is good for Newport Beach. They should
be included on this list.

I’d like to recommend, another time, Jack Keating, who is
president of the Newport Beach Naturalist and Friends, supporters of
the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center at the north end of the
Back Bay, and Dr. Sherwood Roland, Nobel Prize winner.

I can’t believe you would eliminate Dennis Rodman, whether a good
influence or bad influence, very influential. I mean how many other
people do you know that City Council is changing their rules for, and
the mayor is saying he’s worn out his welcome in this town.
Maybe he didn’t make your list for a couple of reasons seeing as
there’s only one other African American in the whole 103. It seems a
little odd, too. But it’s influential, it doesn’t say good influence
or bad influence, so I’m very surprised that Dennis didn’t make the
list. Unless there’s other agendas taking place.

* EDITOR’S NOTE: All of Dennis Rodman’s antics and the Newport
Beach City Council’s decisions pertaining to his antics occurred in
2001, and Rodman made the 2001 DP 103 list.
How can some ducks, a dog, a steeple and a skateboard replace a
hard-working senior volunteer from the local center? Do the reporters
know there are hundreds of volunteer seniors without whom the senior
center would close shop? Maybe the city’s 50th birthday in 2003
reveals these hidden talents.
